Three women were injured this afternoon when a driver in a blue SUV pulled onto the sidewalk in downtown Portland. After striking the three individuals, the driver pulled back onto the road and sped away. Witnesses say the attack appears to have been deliberate but the Oregonian reports the SUV’s owner is known to have mental health issues:
Police pulled over the suspected vehicle at Northeast 16th Avenue and Glisan Street Friday afternoon. Initial reports indicate a man was taken into custody.
One woman is in critical condition at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, a spokesperson said. Another is in serious condition and the third is in fair condition…
A Portland police source said the registered owner of the SUV is flagged in the bureau’s database as suicidal with mental health issues. Police also believe the crash was intentional based on witness statements.
Police have said the suspect is an older white male but haven’t released a name. It’s still too early to draw conclusions but there is at least some reason to think this might be something other than terrorism. This video shows the aftermath of the incident, with at least two victims down on the ground receiving attention:

Eyewitness Christopher Bond was sitting outside at Starbucks when the SUV came down the sidewalk. He says he nearly got hit himself:

This is the SUV the attacker was apparently driving. Someone who saw the damage and had heard about the incident downtown called police to let them know where it was located:
