Roy Moore accuser just found a note Moore wrote her when she was 17

Debbie Wesson Gibson is one of the women mentioned in the original Washington Post story about Roy Moore dating teenage girls. Today the Post has published a follow-up story in which Gibson says she recently came across an old scrapbook that included a card from Moore with a handwritten note:

Debbie Wesson Gibson was in her attic hauling out boxes of Christmas decorations last week when she noticed a storage bin she said she had forgotten about. Inside was a scrapbook from her senior year of high school, and taped to a page titled “Those Who Inspire” was a graduation card.

“Happy graduation Debbie,” it read in slanted cursive handwriting. “I wanted to give you this card myself. I know that you’ll be a success in anything you do. Roy.”…

Shortly after the allegations first surfaced, Moore said in a radio interview with Sean Hannity that he did not know Corfman, but that he remembered Gibson as well as Gloria Thacker Deason, who had told The Post that she dated Moore when she was 18. He called each one “a good girl,” and said that he did not remember dating them.

But at two campaign events in recent days, Moore has backtracked.

At a Nov. 27 campaign event in the north Alabama town of Henagar, Moore said, “The allegations are completely false. They are malicious. Specifically, I do not know any of these women.”

Here’s a screenshot of the inscription:

Here’s the interview with Sean Hannity in case you’ve forgotten (as I had) what Moore said at the time:

Moore: After my return from the military I dated a lot of young ladies. I do recognize however the names of two of these young ladies, Debbie Wesson and Gloria Thacker…

Hannity: Gibson says she was 17 when you spoke to her high school civics class and asked her out on several dates and it did not progress, her words, beyond kissing according to the Washington Post. Let’s stay on her. Did that happen?

Moore: I do not remember speaking to a civics class. I don’t remember that. I do not remember when we— I seem to remember knowing her parents. They were friends. I can’t recall specific dates because that’s been 40 years but I remember her as a good girl. But neither of them have ever stated any inappropriate behavior. She didn’t say anything that…

Hannity: But do you remember ever going on a date with her? She said that you asked her out on the first of several dates but nothing progressed beyond kissing.

Moore: I don’t remember specific dates. I do not.

Gibson says Moore’s recent claim (that he doesn’t know any of his accusers) is the first thing he has said that she knows for a fact is a lie. Also in the scrapbook is a handwritten note dated 1981 in which Gibson describes going out to dinner with Moore.

Gibson worked as a sign language interpreter for the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016, which has led some to suggest her account can’t be trusted. Others, including Sarah Rumpf at Red State have called that criticism “tone deaf.”

This clip shows the scrapbook and the various inscriptions mentioned above. It ends with Gibson looking directly into the camera and telling two of Moore’s other accusers, one of them Leigh Corfman, “I believe you.”
