The House Oversight Committee held a hearing this morning where they planned to debate charges of Contempt of Congress for First Son Hunter Biden. The proceedings were briefly interrupted, however, when the subject of the hearings walked into the chamber with his attorney and his “sugar brother,” Kevin Morris. Hunter rolled past the reporters in the hall without taking any questions and then proceeded to sit in the gallery. This opened to door to some unexpected drama on the committee, but didn’t produce much else of substance. Hunter had not been invited to attend the hearing and had no real role to play. The entire event seemed staged and intended to drive some fresh headlines. (NY Post)
First son Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance Wednesday at a House Oversight Committee hearing where members were debating a resolution holding him in contempt of Congress.
Hunter, 53, ignored the requests from the Oversight and Judiciary committees to sit for interviews Dec. 13 and instead gave a speech ripping Republicans leading an impeachment investigation of his father.
The first son showed up with his lawyer Abbe Lowell and “sugar brother” Kevin Morris and sat in the front row of the hearing room.
After roughly 20 minutes, Hunter and his posse got up and left the chamber. Hunter again did not speak, but Abbe Lowell read a prepared statement for the press, claiming that his client remains willing to testify before the committee, but only in a public hearing. Analysts were quick to speculate that the dog and pony show was intended to serve as supporting evidence that Hunter has been “dealing in good faith” with the committee in the hope that after he is hit with Contempt of Congress charges, the DoJ won’t elect to prosecute him.
I don’t know anyone who truly believes that the Biden Justice Department will prosecute Hunter Biden for anything, but you never know. Much of the drama that ensued was centered around Representative Nancy Mace. After Hunter was seated, she asked, “Who bribed Hunter Biden to be here today?” She then told him to his face that he was “the epitome of white privilege.” She also asked him what he was afraid of.
Yes, it’s a bit ironic for Mace to break out the white privilege card when she’s one of the whitest people you’re likely to find on Capitol Hill. But this entire circus was unscripted, so it appears that everyone was just winging it. The big question is whether or not this stunt was coordinated with the White House. That seems unlikely in the extreme because Joe Biden is already facing questions about whether or not he advised his son not to obey the Congressional subpoena. Analysts on cable news seemed nearly unanimous in agreeing that this is the last thing that the President wants to see in the headlines just now, so it was probably a plot cooked up by Abbe Lowell.
Speaking of unpleasant reminders, what would possess either Hunter or his lawyer to bring Kevin Morris along to the show? He’s not only the person who helped Hunter by paying off some of his enormous tax debt but also a leading purchaser of the First Son’s dubious art sales. He’s tied up in the various stories of corruption swirling around Biden Inc. and Hunter’s pending legal troubles. Why put him in the spotlight at a moment like that?
It’s hard to say whether Hunter Biden is enjoying all of this attention. I can’t imagine he ever really wanted things to play out this way. He just assumed that any problems he encountered would be swept under the rug because of his last name. And for a very long time that proved to be an accurate prediction. But now he’s under a microscope and the heat is being turned up. He may not be laughing for much longer.
