Report: Fairfax High School Facilitated Abortions for Minors Without Parental Consent

This comes from an independent journalist named Walter Curt and hasn't been picked up by any big papers yet. From what I can tell, he seems to have done his homework on this and, if what he reports is true, it's going to be a pretty big scandal in Northern Virginia. According to Curt, Centerville High school arranged to provide abortions for two different minor girls without the involvement of their parents.

Two female students—both minors—say school officials arranged and bankrolled abortions at Fairfax Healthcare Center without so much as a phone call to their parents, a direct break with Virginia’s parental-notification law. One girl underwent the procedure at 17; the other, five months pregnant and pleading to keep her baby, bolted from the clinic after social worker Carolina Díaz allegedly told her she “had no choice.” Principal Chad Lehman, the girls insist, knew—and taxpayers footed the bill.

This allegedly happened in 2021 when the girl was only seventeen. Virginia has a parental notification law for abortions which says at least on parent or guardian must approve for a minor to get an abortion. There is a workaround through the legal system in cases where a minor gets the approval of a judge instead but there's no indication that procedure was followed in this case.

A second Centreville minor, five months pregnant and wavering, was allegedly told by the same social worker that she “had no other choice.” The girl, terrified, ultimately bolted from the clinic rather than go through with the procedure. She later confided in her teacher, Mrs. Zenaida Perz, who allowed her name to be used on the record and provided The W.C. Dispatch a recording of the family confirming that no one at the school had ever informed them of the intent to terminate their daughter’s pregnancy. I have reviewed the audio in full and verified its content, it’s heartbreaking.

Both incidents, sources say, were green‑lighted by Principal Chad Lehman and financed—again, allegedly—through school funds, meaning taxpayer dollars may have underwritten clandestine abortions carried out on minors without parental knowledge. If even half of these claims prove accurate, someone at the county office is writing checks that violate both state law and every standard of parental authority we once took for granted.

Mrs. Perz, the teacher one of the girls confided in, claims there was also a cover-up attempt that followed. Statement written by students at the school say there was an effort by school administrators to "bait" Mrs. Perz into some sort of policy violation so they could fire her or pressure her to resign.

It does seem to me that there has been a push in blue states to give school administrators more control over minor students without informing parents. That's certainly true here in California where teachers and administrators are not required to inform parents if a student announces a gender transition at school, starts dressing as the opposite sex or using a new name. The law is called the SAFETY Act. Gavin Newsom tried to defend this just a few months ago on Bill Maher's show saying it was merely about preventing teachers from being fired if they refuse to snitch on students. But as Maher said in response "snitching" and parents just doesn't compute.

This hasn't really become a legal standard across the US but I wonder how often there are attempts like the one described above to simply bypass parents because teachers and administrators decide that is what's best.
