Russia finally responds to China's peace plan

Last week, China jumped into the Ukrainian war debate with a 12-point proposal for a peace plan. (Before almost immediately turning around and saying they were in discussions to provide lethal aid to Russia.) It took a couple of days, but yesterday Russia responded to the proposalsort of. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov took a question from a reporter about the peace proposal during a press conference. He spoke glowingly of “our Chinese friends,” saying that of course, their proposal was worthy of “careful analysis” and “great attention.” But he doused the idea of a rapid end to the hostilities, saying that any path toward ending the war would be “long and stressful.” So in other words, he gave us nothing of substance. Russia has responded to China’s peace plan to end the war with Ukraine, saying that its details should be the subject of careful analysis and that the process to halt the conflict will be long and “stressful.”

This was revealed on Monday when Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov answered a question about Russia’s view on whether China’s peace plan could work.

“Any attempts to develop plans that will help transfer the conflict to a peaceful course deserve attention. We treat the plan of our Chinese friends with such great attention. As for the details, of course, the details should be the subject of careful analysis…

You can already sense the change in Russia’s attitude toward China as was on display in Peskov’s response. Any semblance of an adversarial or competitive relationship between the two countries has seemingly evaporated, at least for now. His comments about “our Chinese friends” are a fairly clear signal that the modern axis of evil is growing more solid this year.

As for the peace plan itself, the only comments coming from the White House thus far have suggested skepticism. Biden’s team seems to feel that the peace proposal is more of a public relations campaign intended to bolster Beijing’s image as a global leader and influencer of international diplomatic affairs. (It’s almost as if Biden doesn’t want the war to end. Isn’t that strange?)

Biden was even more blunt during an interview on ABC News this weekend. He claimed that China’s plan would only benefit Russia. “Putin is applauding it, so how could it be any good? I’m not being facetious. I’m being deadly earnest.”

But that’s not really true at all. As noted above, Russia isn’t rushing in to endorse China’s plan. And how could any plan that brings a halt to the fighting, even if only temporarily, not be a benefit to Ukraine? Granted, the plan has some serious holes in it because it doesn’t address who would control which territories after the war or mention any reparations to Ukraine for all of the damage that’s been caused. But that’s how diplomacy works. You begin with small steps and try to find areas of agreement.

We already know that we’re not going to get much out of this White House apart from thinly disguised spin. The relationship between China and Russia (along with Iran and North Korea) needs to be watched carefully. But the majority of the legacy media will happily play along with whatever the DNC narrative of the week happens to be. That’s why we need to have strong conservative voices involved in this debate.
