Be careful where you tweet. (And party)

Everyone loves a good holiday party. Though it’s less common now, back in my day we even had office parties where people would knock back a few drinks, eat sandwiches and welcome in the Christmas season. Apparently that attitude isn’t entirely dead.. at least not in the halls of Congress. But if you plan on partying hardy, Marty, you might not want to tweet about it where everyone can see.

Eight days into it, and a series of ill-advised tweets later, three staffers for the Washington Democrat were fired Thursday after a local website detailed a pattern of wildly unprofessional behavior—including drinking on the job and insulting the congressman—POLITICO has confirmed.

“Congressman Larsen and his staff became aware of the issue concerning the three staff members at noon EST. We became aware of the issue through a tweet referencing an article about the incident. Congressman Larsen immediately decided to fire the three staff members involved in the incident. The staff members were dismissed at 1:10 p.m. EST,” Larsen’s office said in a statement.

The Capitol Hill staff culture has always resembled a fraternity party for the just out of college professionals who dominate the offices, but the staffers involved this incident clearly crossed the line, Larsen’s office says.

It’s hard to even hazard a guess as to what the staffers for Congressman Larsen were thinking, assuming there was any thinking involved at all. To be direct, these are the actions of people who were just looking to get fired. Not only drinking on the job while carrying out the business of the people, but going on Twitter and broadcasting it to the world? They even assigned this “project” a hashtag of #D2R for “December to Remember.” A couple of samples follow:
