Democrats are upset that colleges will no longer be allowed to load students up with federal loans for degrees that leave them worse off than people who never went to college at all.
Senator Bernie Sanders (VT) tweeted: “In Trump’s vulgar world of oligarchy, greed and corruption, he wants to cut off student loans for these majors because he doesn’t think graduates will earn enough,” before listing teaching, social work, art, and other fields.
Rep Mark Pocan (WI) said: “Now Trump wants to pick your major in college if you need a student loan. If your career doesn’t make enough money to please him, he apparently wants to end it before it even begins.”
Sanders and Pocan are referring to the Do No Harm rule, which Congress enacted last year as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The rule states that colleges may not disburse federal loans to students in programs where graduates typically earn less than young high school diploma holders.
