Pass Rusher Paying $4.4M to Not Play for the Jets?

But even if the dispute ends imminently, Reddick is set to lose out on an eye-popping sum of money due to both fines and forfeited game checks.

Once he didn’t show up to the team’s training camp, Reddick began accruing daily fines of $50,000 during the preseason. Then, once the regular season began, he started giving up the paycheck he earns every week as a portion of his $14.3 million salary, each one worth just under $800,000. Moreover, there are additional discretionary fines that NFL teams can assess.

Unlike in the past, when those fines would be waived by a team once the two sides had resolved their contract dispute, nowadays there is no way for Reddick to get much of that money back. The 2020 collective bargaining agreement made those preseason fines, which totaled $4.4 million, mandatory—Reddick has to either cut a check to the league for that amount or the Jets will take it out of his paycheck.

That's as of right now. He could end up owing eight figures to the Jets. Even if he returns now, he'll essentially play for free for several weeks.

Of course, I feel pretty lucky. I'm not playing for the Jets and it's not costing me anything.
