There They Go Again: 'Reagan' Stalls at Box Office?

The only newcomer landing in the upper reaches of the chart is the indie biopic Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid and based on Paul Kengor’s book The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism. The film appears to be narrowly beating holdover Twisters, now in its seventh weekend, to come in No. 4 with just shy of $10 million for the four-day holiday weekend (numbers could shift on Monday).

Receiving blistering reviews — its critics score is 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — Reagan fared better with audiences, who gave the biopic an A CinemaScore. Box office analysts knew the film would play older but hoped the attention surrounding the 2024 presidential election would broaden the audience, with no such luck. Roughly 85 percent of ticket buyers are over the age of 35 — including an unheard of 66 percent over the age of 55, setting Reagan up for a promising run on premium VOD, a preferred platform for older consumers.

Distributed by SBD, Reagan is faring best in the middle of the country, with white moviegoers making up nearly 80 percent of the audience.

"Stalls"? I checked Box Office Mojo for the numbers, and Reagan is far ahead of other films debuting this holiday weekend. The nearest competition for new entries is Afraid, which has only done $4.5M with a per-screen average of $1490. Reagan has the third-best overall screen average this weekend at $3340, behind the two Disney films at the top of the chart (Deadpool & Wolverine and Alien: Romulus), and well ahead of Sony's popular It Ends With Us at $2682 in its fourth week of release. Lionsgate's The Crow fared far worse in its second week, with only $2.25M gross and $817 per screen. In fact, Reagan has already outgrossed The Crow in total in its first three days.

This is a good first weekend for an indie release like Reagan
