Between about 2013 and 2023, the man, Jorge Alberto Ramos, who was born in El Salvador, sent gifts and money to at least three women there, prosecutors said. He paid for smugglers to bring the women across the border and to his home in the Bronx, where he raped and sexually abused them, ordered them to stay inside and threatened to have them deported, telling at least one of them that immigration officials were everywhere, according to prosecutors.

Mr. Ramos, 43, who was arrested on Thursday morning, is an adjunct professor at a public university in New York that was not named in an indictment unsealed on Thursday.
