D.C. Chief of Police retiring after hugely successful tenure, headed to FBI to see what he can do there

D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee took over as the District’s top cop on Jan. 2 , 2021, just four days before the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capital.

Contee knew the streets of D.C. as he grew up in a Northeast neighborhood.

While in office, the District has seen a steady increase in homicides. 198 murders in his first year and 203 last year.

So far in 2023? 67 murders. It’s a 20% increase from the same time last year.

Total crime is also up 25%.
