The Material Girl never had the best voice or the most seductive hooks. She boasted a little of everything – an attractive figure, a radio-friendly sound and lyrics that nailed the zeitgeist.
Her greatest talent? Knowing how to grab people by the scruff of their necks. By that measure, she had few peers.
Time hasn’t dulled that instinct.
The superstar, globally adored and with all the resources western society can offer, is now a professional victim at the tender age of 64. She’s following in the footsteps of Meghan Markle, who proved you can claim victimhood status no matter your wealth, beauty or privilege.
[Let me cast a slight dissent in this case. Yes, she’s whining and attempting to play a victim card to shut down criticism. That’s not really all that new for Madonna anyway, who has claimed to be oppressed by criticism at other stages of life too — by the Catholic Church, moral codes, the industry, and so on. But the impulse for plastic surgery is not unique to her, and the pressure of keeping up youthful appearances IS higher on women in the entertainment industry.
If you doubt that, consider all the times that male action stars get paired up with actresses half their age as a romantic interest. How many times have we seen that with female action stars? As I mentioned to Cam Edwards on yesterday’s VIP Gold chat, Goldie Hawn had a great line about that in “The First Wives Club”: Hollywood has three ages for women — “babe, district attorney, and Driving Miss Daisy.” — Ed]
