President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced sanctions on the Russian company that built the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline after Germany halted the pipeline’s certification and as a senior U.S. defense official warned that Moscow is “ready as they can be” to attack Ukraine.
The Biden administration has directed officials to impose sanctions on the company, Nord Stream 2 AG, Biden said, adding that the U.S. “will not hesitate to take further steps if Russia continues to escalate.” The administration has begun describing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order to send troops into eastern Ukraine as “an invasion.”
The Russians have brought in “nearly 100 percent” of the forces the U.S. anticipates Putin would need for a large-scale invasion, the official said, adding “They are literally ready to go now.”
