Woman at Biden event: 'I was told to go off this paper but I can't'

A black woman at Joe Biden’s campaign event in Kenosha, Wis., Thursday said she was “told to” read a scripted question.

“I’m just going to be honest, Mr. Biden. I was told to go off this paper, but I can’t,” she said, holding a piece of paper in her right hand. “You need the truth.”

It was unclear who told her to read off the page and what it said.

The woman, who said her name was Portia Bennett, told Biden that blacks were “heavily angry” at racial disparities in their community and said the Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake as he was arrested on Aug. 23 should be imprisoned. She also said the strife in Kenosha did not begin with Blake’s shooting.
