The Democratic Party and its socialist/progressive/communist lunatic offshoots are spawning and encouraging every sort of lunatic to indulge their worst impulses.
When you have unending, over the top histrionics with nutjob rhetoric that never ceases, the battering on the six brain cells of the lower orders causes them to fry mentally, and whatever tenuous hold they had on civilized behaviour just snaps.

But, HEY!
It's all fair in love and war, right?
And words are only violence if those words are directed at someone on the Left's team.
And violence is only violent...well...same-same.

And so as more and more lefty grifting and lies get exposed, and the schemes come tumbling down, and the grift gets maybe not so lucrative any more, the rhetoric from the theater kids get even more heated, and the knuckle-dragging australopithecines with the brooding supraorbital ridges who form their foot soldiers get more angry and righteously lash out.
Because the Right has it coming to them.
This has made being one of the good guys, the guys trying to expose the graft and wholesale theft that's been facilitated by the Democrats and progressives for so long, a very sketchy gig as far as personal safety.
The thugs benefiting from the various fraud schemes and the hordes of paid operatives with signs at protests have a vested interest in keeping the good times rolling and were always fringe elements as far as manners went.

Local reporters, though, don't have the advantages of a national audience and go about their business in an environment that is usually safer than that of those who are diving into ongoing controversies that are already inflamed.
The Maine Wire, a dynamite organization that has been fearlessly chronicling the Chinese marijuana trade, the Graham Platner story, Janet Mills and the general disgrace that is Maine Democrats, and the Somali community's various ongoing scandals to mention a few, is an anathema to progressive Maine in general. In other words, they do terrific, honest work.
Oftentimes, their local reporters are verbally abused or barred from entering events other media is allowed in, and The Maine Wire always fights back. There isn't any backing down in them, incensing local power players even more.
They, too, have noticed the raised temperature.
