Throughout all of the hearings, a parade of Republicans complained about the lack of “firsthand” and “fact-based” witnesses — yet Democrats wouldn’t confront them in real time with the fact that Trump himself blocked testimony from key witnesses like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, former Energy Secretary Rick Perry, former national security adviser John Bolton and Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani. Why didn’t Democrats on the panel point out that fact every single time a Republican complained?
As Jordan mocked Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, for being the “star witness,” Democrats should have had video ready to play on demand of Jordan at a 2012 proceeding to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. “How can you ignore the facts when you don’t get the facts? That’s what this is all about,” he said then. “I think we’re right on target with this. We just want the information so we have the facts.”
