A BMW driver who treated a traffic circle like a racetrack lost his license for a year and received a 12-week suspended prison sentence in court earlier this week.
Ben Griffiths, 21, of nearby Milford Haven, Wales, pleaded guilty Tuesday to driving his black BMW 318 dangerously on the roundabout, using a maneuver called drifting in which a vehicle slides sideways for a prolonged period. Police tracked him down after video of the incident, which took place around midnight Nov. 1, was posted on social media.
He has no previous convictions.
In an interview following his arrest, Griffiths said the BMW was used for specialist drift events at Pembrey Circuit racetrack near Pembrey, Wales. The area is about 200 miles west of London in the United Kingdom.
“I was in control of my car (during the incident) because of my off-road experience of drifting,” he said then. “I was alone in the car, I was carrying out a one-off test maneuver and I didn’t put anyone else in danger.”
