New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley had a private meeting on Thursday afternoon ahead of the Republican presidential debate in North Charleston, South Carolina and the discussion included two topics: the Republican Governors Association and Christie’s pitch for an endorsement.
Christie and Haley have had a friendly relationship going back to Christie’s time as chairman of the RGA, where Haley currently sits on the association’s executive committee. Officials close to the two governors said the discussion was friendly. Those aides, however, declined to offer more details — such as how Haley responded when Christie broached the idea of an endorsement or exactly what about the RGA the two discussed.
“They are longtime friends and colleagues, and they take the opportunity to catch up whenever it’s possible,” Haley’s deputy chief of staff, Rob Godfrey, said in an email.
