Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, after a second straight day of speculation over his political future, said Wednesday he plans to run for a fourth term in 2016.

“I have every intention of doing so,” Gowdy said in a brief interview.
He made his comments after GOP Rep. John Fleming of Louisiana set Capitol Hill abuzz by telling C-SPAN Wednesday morning that Gowdy, chairman of the special House committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, planned to retire at the end of his current term. Fleming later apologized, saying he had misinterpreted Gowdy’s comments.
