Adams: Border states have created a "funnel" for illegal immigrants to our sanctuary city!

Er … so? Didn’t Eric Adams proudly proclaim New York City’s status as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants? Didn’t Adams and other city leaders lecture conservatives along the Rio Grande about openness and diversity while their states absorbed all the costs? The border states simply took Adams at his word and helped direct a very small percentage of the massive flow over the southern border to NYC’s “sanctuary.”

Suddenly, with about 0.5% of illegal immigrants showing up at Adams’ lamp at the Big Apple door, sanctuary status has given way to siege mentality. And just as suddenly, Adams has discovered the Joe Biden Border Crisis:

Mayor Eric Adams issued a dire warning to President Biden, cautioning that the lack of federal funding to help the migrant crisis will eventually “decimate” the Big Apple — which serves as the “economic engine” of the country.

Adams slammed border states for creating a “funnel” to New York on “CBS Mornings” Thursday, saying, “New York City is the economic engine of this entire state and country. If you decimate this city, you’re going to decimate the foundation of what’s happening.”

Gee, Your Honor, you mean the way that you and your fellow latté liberals have allowed border states to be “decimated” for the last two-plus years? And for the last couple of decades before that? When the border states demanded an investment in security to prevent large-scale intrusions, Adams and other progressive Democrats rushed to identify their cities and states as “sanctuaries” from enforcement of immigration laws, setting up clear incentives for border crossers and human traffickers to continue their activities, and to escalate them. That cheap virtue-signaling went to the very top of the Democrat Party, with Joe Biden declaring during and after the election that he would welcome immigrants in contrast to the Trump administration’s policies.

Border states finally got fed up paying the price for the cheap virtue-signaling of Northern progressive hypocrites. A few thousand immigrants over the last couple of years — barely a day’s burden for Texas — had Adams screaming a year ago about victimization and the dangers to the engine of New York’s economy. What about the potential engines of economy in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico? Where was the concern from Adams et al while sanctimoniously lecturing those states about welcoming attitudes, while bragging about refusals to comply with immigration enforcement?

Now that 100,000 or so immigrants have found their way to NYC — still a drop in the bucket in the swarm that have crossed into the US since Biden’s election — Adams wants federal funding to deal with it. And he wants a lot more than Biden’s willing to give so far:

Hizzoner’s stern warning to the White House comes hours before he is set to sit down with one of President Biden’s top aides, Tom Perez, who serves as the director of intergovernmental affairs at the White House, The Post has learned.

The meeting also follows Adams’ jaw-dropping cautioning that the projected price tag to house and provide social services for the asylum seekers could hit $12 billion — and that another 60,000 could join the roughly 100,000 who have trekked to the five boroughs so far.

The city has been allotted around $140 million from the Biden administration and Gov. Kathy Hochul included $1 billion for the cause in the recently passed state budget.

Why are they getting any funding? If New York City wants federal assistance in dealing with illegal immigrants, they should first rescind their “sanctuary city” status and start fully complying with immigration enforcement. If they refuse to cooperate out of “principle,” then let them fund that principle themselves. That money should be directed to the states most impacted by the illegal immigration and human trafficking that Adams and his ilk keep incentivizing.

But just how concerned is Adams, really, about his city’s economic engine being “decimated”? Apparently not concerned enough to pick up the phone and talk to the man behind the crisis, as Politico noted today:

Mayor Eric Adams said late Wednesday he has not talked with President Joe Biden in 2023 — a striking admission for someone who was once on a list of the president’s top surrogates and who is seeking federal help for the city’s migrant crisis.

Adams told CNN that he and the president have not conferred since Biden was in New York last year, but added that his team has been talking with White House and other immigration officials about the flow of migrants to New York City shelters. He said he still supports the president’s reelection.

Adams has accomplished the seemingly impossible. He has managed to sink to the same credibility level as his predecessor, Bill de Blasio, and perhaps even more quickly than de Blasio managed. He’s doing a Chicken Little routine on national TV without doing a bare minimum to deal with the crisis himself. The hypocrisy apparently knows no bounds at Gracie Mansion.

Want to stop dealing with the illegal-immigrant crisis, Your Honor? Stop being a sanctuary city, and stop lecturing border states about border security. Fix your own problems first, especially those of your own making, and maybe do your job before doing CBS Mornings.
