UK Reaction to Fairford Plot Is Suicidal Empathy in Action

Beege and John have both written extensively on the bizarre Fairford terrorist attack and the even more bizarre reaction to it in the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately for you, you haven't benefited much from my wisdom so far, and I aim to round out the takes so you get a hat trick.

The story, as Beege has said, gets more bizarre every day. After days of implying through word and deed that there was less here than initially met the eye, the Brits are in full reverse mode, giving us all information whiplash.

Noah Rothman's article at National Review tipped me off and triggered me to write about what I have been mulling, not so much as a news item, but more because we are seeing in real time the underlying prejudices and inclinations of the British elites. They are more concerned about downplaying foreign and Muslim threats than dealing with them because they fear public backlash more than actual Islamist violence.

It's suicidal empathy in action.

Let's take a look at the sequence of events:

  • The news broke about the actual events, about which I will assume you already know. An unknown number of men are seen in a rural area next to RAF Fairford, blocking a road and acting suspiciously.
  • There are conflicting reports about how, exactly, the response that we know about was triggered. First we heard it was a farmer who reported the suspicious activity that triggered the response; then we heard it was one of the perps.
  • After all the hoopla, the suspects were bailed out within a day, and rumors that they were fuel thieves and not terrorists spread, backed by the seemingly lackadaisical attitude of the authorities, which implied "no threat."
  • We get mixed messages from the Brits: they imply no threat, but they extend the investigation to be sure.
  • That is contradicted by Trump and Rubio, and now Netanyahu, all saying they knew about a plot and were tracking these people. Also, that Iran was involved.
  • The Brits say they take it all seriously and are investigating, which seems to contradict the "they were warned" statements.
  • Now they are admitting that Iran was likely involved days later, and while the suspects are on the streets.

From what we can gather, the Brits were warned by the Americans and Israelis, but the perps were caught not because of an intelligence operation that caught them in the act, but because of multiple reports from people in real time.

It all looks sloppy and suggests that the British were not taking the warnings or the danger to the public, or at least American military personnel and equipment, seriously.

Summing it up:

Why London sounded ambiguous at first

  • Counter Terrorism Policing took over Sunday. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor would only say they were keeping "an open mind" about proxies "knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state" — no country named.
  • Monday: all five were released on police bail after ~18-24 hours, under "stringent conditions on their movement and contact," but still under investigation. Taylor called it "grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers."
  • PM Andy Burnham chaired a Cobra meeting Monday and warned against speculation.

Then the shift

  • Wednesday, Burnham told the BBC: "There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford, but of course it remains an ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation". He added "Obviously I wouldn't say it lightly" and said the UK was working closely with the U.S.
  • Same day, Netanyahu told Fox that Israel had passed Britain intelligence "that there was going to be an attack, and it's an Iranian-sponsored attack".
  • Iran's London embassy "categorically rejects" any link, and Foreign Minister Araghchi said the UK was "barking up the wrong tree".

On the bail question — this is the perplexing part, but there's a procedural logic:

  • UK sources briefed that the men "would not have been bailed if there were serious concerns about the danger they posed" — the downgrade came after bomb experts found no trace of explosives, just 36 hours after the arrests.
  • The BBC also reported the operation was not intelligence-led — it started with the farmer's 999 call — which cuts against the idea they were long-tracked cell members.
  • One odd detail from The Times: one of the suspects reportedly called emergency services himself shortly before the arrests.

Those last three lists are Muse summing it all up for me.

None of that makes sense, on its face. The British politicians seemed to bend over backward to downplay the threat from Iran and Islamists, despite the fact that all the alarm bells were ringing even before the attack. The fact that it was not UK intelligence that caught them, despite their being tracked by the Americans and Israelis, shows they were worried about racial profiling, as we know they do in every instance.

Their main concern, from all the evidence, was to downplay the danger posed by Iran and the Islamists, keep telling us that the perpetrators were "British nationals," which tells us little, but implies they are descendants of native English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish people when they clearly, from the photos, are not. And then they release people they now implicitly concede are dangerous back into the public.

For God's sake, man, keep your eye on the ball.

Except they are keeping their eye on a ball, just not the one they should be. They are playing a different game than we would expect. Their concern is not pointing the finger at Muslims, Iran, or riling up the "far right." Safety comes second.

As I said, suicidal empathy in action.
