Florida Republican: I've met undocumented aliens ... aliens aliens, I mean

She’s not saying it’s aliens, but … actually, Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera does say it was aliens. In an interview on Spanish-language TV eight years ago, the Republican primary candidate for the House seat due to be vacated by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s retirement claims she was taken up into an alien spaceship for a tour when she was seven years old. Rodriguez Aguilera also claims that the three aliens have remained in telepathic contact with her ever since.

So what do aliens look like? Kind of like Thor and Brünnhilde, apparently:

Three blond, big-bodied beings — two females, one male — visited her when she was 7 years old and have communicated telepathically with her several times in her life, she says. (Sen. Bill Nelson served as payload officer aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986. All seven people aboard were from Earth. As far as is known.)

Rodriguez Aguilera, 59, a Republican who is running to replace retiring Miami Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, recounted her experience with the ETs during a 2009 television interview.

She described “going up” inside the spaceship — though whether it went into space or just hovered around town was left unclear.

“I went in. There were some round seats that were there, and some quartz rocks that controlled the ship — not like airplanes,” Rodriguez Aguilera said.

After this emerged, Rodriguez Aguilera stressed her Christianity — and cited the Vatican and Jimmy Carter in attempting to dismiss the story:

“For years people, including presidents like Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter and astronauts have publicly claimed to have seen unidentified flying objects and scientists like Stephen Hawking and institutions like the Vatican have stated that there are billions of galaxies in the universe and we are probably not alone,” she told the Miami Herald on Friday.

“I personally am a Christian and have a strong belief in God, I join the majority of Americans who believe that there must be intelligent life in the billions of planets and galaxies in the universe.”

Fortunately, Republicans in FL-27 will have other options in next year’s primary, although not all of them will be out of this world. Miami-Dade commissioner Bruno Barreiro supported Trump in 2016, while former school board member Raquel Regaldo opposed Trump, which seems to be the main dividing line these days in the GOP. The problem in FL-27 is that it now leans Democrat; it has a Cook rating of D+5, which makes Ros-Lehtinen’s retirement a tricky moment for the GOP. A Trump-opposing candidate may not survive the primary, but a Trump-supporting nominee may have serious trouble getting enough support to keep the seat from flipping.

Over the weekend, the Miami Herald analyzed the race among Democratic candidates, highlighting the eighth announced contender, Miami city commissioner Ken Russell. Before going into politics, Russell made a living as a professional yo-yo player, and quipped to the Herald, “Some might say that Washington has enough yo-yos so that one more won’t be noticed.” That’s probably true, but consider what a wealth of blog posts would ensue from a general election between a yo-yo artist and an alien-telepath.

Here are two clips and a link, the first of which is the interview from 2009 in which Rodriguez Aguilera reveals her experience not just in international relations but in interstellar relations. The second clip is where everyone might recognize the story, and this link explains why I’ll get legit nastygrams for posting the second.
