It will be a busy day today, so we’ll need to get our palate cleansers out of the way early. This video from Pittsburgh’s CBS affiliate tells the story of the nation’s most foolish football fan … and perhaps the most foolish soon-to-be ex-IRS official this side of Lois Lerner. At Sunday’s Steelers win over Baltimore, Sapp began getting into a drunken rage at one of the gates of Heinz Field, prompting off-duty and on-duty officers to attempt to get him to leave. After Sapp knocked a woman unconscious during the tirade that followed, he resisted arrest, but that’s where the fun began for Sapp (via Instapundit):
Sapp sustained some cuts in the struggle and was transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital for treatment.
While at the hospital, Sapp allegedly tried to bribe officers to let him go.
According to the criminal complaint, Sapp stated, “Listen, I know how this works. How much money will it take to make this go away and to let me go home today?”
The officers informed Sapp that he could not attempt to bribe them, but Sapp continued.
“Look, I am an IRS agent and I can help you in other ways if you let me go home and make this go away.”
After being treated at the hospital, Sapp was transported to the Allegheny County Jail and was being held on $10,000 bond.
When I first read the piece, I assumed that Sapp may have been lying about being an IRS agent as a way to get out of the arrest. KDKA went as far as looking Sapp up on Google Plus, though, and found this:
Note that this is the picture pulled by KDKA for its report, rather than a booking photo. If this is the same Stephen Sapp — and this one does live in Pittsburgh, according to his Google Plus account, although that’s not necessarily conclusive as identification — then either Sapp actually is an IRS agent, or he spends a lot of time fantasizing about being one. And why would anyone fantasize about being that? On the plus side, Sapp can console himself by noting that there is plenty of precedent for IRS agents to take the Fifth and still come out with their retirement intact. But for that to work, Sapp will have to demonstrate that he was attacking conservatives, I suppose.
