Video: University stumbles onto solution to budget deficits

This is either your palate cleanser for the afternoon or your outrageous outrage of the day. Northwestern University has defended Professor John Bailey for staging a live demonstration of the use of sex toys in class, which included the penetration of a woman performed in front of the class. The demonstration was apparently intended to demonstrate the difference between real orgasm and another kind of performance entirely. Without a doubt, you’d better observe the Official Content Warning on this post:

Controversy Over Live Sex Demo at Northwestern University’s ‘Human Sexuality’ Class : MyFoxCHICAGO.com

More than 100 Northwestern students watched as a naked woman was penetrated by a sex toy wielded by her boyfriend during an after-class session of the school’s popular “Human Sexuality” class.

The demo, which was optional, was part of the popular class taught by Prof. John Michael Bailey, the Sun-Times is reporting. More than 600 students take the class, which the course description says “will treat human sexuality as a subject for scientific inquiry.” …

In an email, Northwestern defended the class and its professor.

“Northwestern University faculty members engage in teaching and research on a wide variety of topics, some of them controversial and at the leading edge of their respective disciplines,” said spokesman Alan Cubbage. “The University supports the efforts of its faculty to further the advancement of knowledge.”

Come on — let’s look at this for what it is: a fabulous revenue opportunity! Just imagine the enrollments at Northwestern after this class experience gets wide dissemination. Why, every man in a trenchcoat will beat a path to Northwestern’s door. The university would be able to solve all of its budget problems in an instant. They might do even better with a little marketing, say by hanging red lamps all over the campus and taking out ads in underground newspapers.

Seriously, though, when the Kinsey Institute thinks you may have gone too far, it’s time to reconsider your position:

Bill Yarber, a researcher at Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute and author of the widely used textbook “Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America,” said he’s never heard of a naked woman being brought to orgasm in front of a class of students.

“They way you present it there is very unconventional,” he said. “There’s certain boundaries of things, I think, that are acceptable and that would certainly be pushing that.”

Yes, it just might be possible that strapping a “toy” onto a power tool and penetrating a naked woman’s genitalia might push folks to object, perhaps especially the alumni of Northwestern, who may decide that they have better uses for their donations than funding puerile demonstrations of live sex on stage.

Once again, real life has caught up with satire.  When Monty Python included this scene in its Meaning of Life in 1983, it was funny because of its hilarious exaggeration. And just in case you’ve forgotten, this too carries an Official Content Warning:
