Obamateurism of the Day

Michael Moore tried to paint George W. Bush as out of touch by showing him on a golf course answering a reporter’s question about terrorism. Bush only played golf 24 times in eight years as President. Barack Obama has played 32 rounds of golf in the first fifteen months of his presidency. That wouldn’t be so bad, except that Round 32 came on the same day as the funeral for Polish President Lech Kaczynsky. Obama couldn’t attend the funeral because of the volcanic activity in Iceland and the debris in the air over Europe, but apparently golf was a higher priority than paying his respects at the Polish Embassy, too — and the Poles definitely noticed:

US President Barack Obama went golfing at the Andrews Air Force Base yesterday, it was reported, just hours after Poles had laid their late president to rest.

“On a cool but sun-drenched day, the president and three golfing companions head[ed] to Andrews Air Force Base on Sunday to play 18 holes. It is the 32nd time Mr. Obama has played golf since taking office Jan. 20, 2009, according to CBS Radio’s Mark Knoller,” reported the Washington Times on Sunday.

In an article posted on its website, the newspaper also reported that while US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden had taken the time to visit the Polish Embassy to sign a book of condolences, President Obama had not yet taken the time out to do so.

Don’t worry, Poland. I’m sure Obama offered a moment of silence … on the fifth fairway.

Update: Bush played 24 rounds of golf in his presidency, according to the Washington Times, not “less than a dozen.”  I’ve corrected the reference above and added the link; thanks to Marlon W for the heads-up.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
