Obamateurism of the Day

We’re back after a week off, and it may take a while to get through some of the backlog. However, our Commander in Chief gave us a gimme yesterday to allow a little extra time for research. On a holiday commemorating our fallen heroes and on the day when North Korea conducted a nuclear test, what was the biggest schedule entry on President Obama’s calendar? A lengthy meeting in the Situation Room? A day meeting with veterans groups and visiting the families of those killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan? Er … not quite:

The president spent around four hours on the links this afternoon — arriving around 1:30 and leaving just before 5:30 — staying in Washington after the ceremony at Arlington instead of flying back to Camp David as he was originally scheduled.

Four hours on the golf course, and less than 30 minutes speaking at Arlington, where he gave a Memorial Day speech. During the speech, which he gave just before playing his round of golf, he made this request:

So on this day of silent remembrance and solemn prayer I ask all Americans, wherever you are, whoever you’re with, whatever you’re doing, to pause in national unity at 3 o’clock this afternoon. I ask you to ring a bell, or offer a prayer, say a silent “thank you.”

The White House assured reporters that Obama complied with his own request by observing a moment of silence on — I kid you not — the golf course:

For President Obama that moment came in the middle of a round of golf at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia. … White House aides told reporters that the president paused at 3 p.m. to observe a moment of silent prayer.

Um, yeah. Or he may have observed a moment of silent contemplation of a ten-foot putt, too. Was it really too much to ask to have the President at work in the White House on a day when Kim Jong-Il tested a nuclear weapon, or at least to spend as much time honoring veterans as he did honing his short game?

And I don’t want to play the “If Bush did this” game for the next four years, but in fact, Bush did get a lot of criticism for answering a reporter’s question about terrorism in August 2002 while visiting Israel. Michael Moore included the clip in one of his movies:

Bush didn’t do this on Memorial Day, and he didn’t do it on a day when North Korea tested a nuclear weapon and threatened the security of the Pacific Rim. Think Michael Moore or anyone on the Left will be criticizing this? Don’t hold your breath.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Why should a little nuclear weapon mess up a day of golf?

Right_of_Attila on May 26, 2009 at 8:09 AM

Too bad we don’t get a mulligan on the election.

SouthernGent on May 26, 2009 at 8:10 AM

Many people will find the president playing golf during his requested moment of reflection on a day when North Korea was causing problems unpalatable. I had a good chuckle over the stupidity of this scheduling.

However, Obama believes himself to be so beloved (and his poll numbers give him some reason to believe this) that his true followers will not get upset about this.

Obama also knows that most of the people will never hear of this and even if they do they probably won’t care much.

Brat4life on May 26, 2009 at 8:18 AM

I’m underwhelmed with most of this Obamateurism. First, because I don’t honestly expect the NORKs to observe one of our holidays. Second, Obama chose to spend Memorial Day just like hundreds or thousands of people I saw yesterday in Myrtle Beach, ie. hitting the course. He also didn’t say something sarcastic like “Watch this drive!”. I think the only true Obamateurism of this entire topic is scheduling the moment of silence while he’s playing golf. If he had picked any time after he was done with his round, I think we wouldn’t be talking about this.

LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 8:19 AM

This is not really relevant but what the heck. Past presidents who played (or played at) golf, allowed media observation of their game and scores. I feel that the story’s about Obama’s game will follow the pattern of those about his education. “Yes I attended golf but, no you cannot see my scores”

Limerick on May 26, 2009 at 8:24 AM

Obama sees only upside in this. Unspoken, Obama truly hates the troops, and feels that those who have given their lives for their country are suckers, IMHO. He knows his golf outing will never be reported, nor will his “moment of silence”, which was probably punctuated with a bit of hooting and cheering when he sank that 10-footer.

What would the moment of silence have been for, anyway? Praise to Allah? I doubt he is a believer in G-d, but the devil? Mebbe.

stonemeister on May 26, 2009 at 8:24 AM

Second, Obama chose to spend Memorial Day just like hundreds or thousands of people I saw yesterday in Myrtle Beach, ie. hitting the course.

Except he’s not other people; he’s the president. He could have spent the day at Walter Reed visiting the troops, or at a nearby military base, visiting with military families. But he avoids anything that requires extemporaneous speakihg.

If the president is just like other people, then there was nothing wrong with Bush’s allegedly “sarcastic” “watch this drive,” either.

Good morning, Ed.

Was it really too much to ask to have the President at work in the White House on a day when Kim Jong-Il tested a nuclear weapon, or at least to spend as much time honoring veterans as he did honing his short game?

This is a particularly egregious example of Obama’s narcissism in action. Who is in charge when the president is pre-occupied with his top priority, himself? Biden or Michelle?

Let’s see here…North Korea’s threatening with nukes, Achmedinejad is challenging Mr. President for a debate, he has basically 1 person in the Department of the Treasury, he wants to replace the greatest Medical System in the world with a failed model, he admits that we’re out of money, and he’s playing golf and acting like he’s praying on a golf course. Was a basketball court not available?

kingsjester on May 26, 2009 at 8:31 AM

He has no inner voice. That little background noise in your head that says “maybe this isn’t a good idea”. Once again, he passes up an opportunity to show the nation and the world that he has what it takes to truly be a leader for our nation and the world. Instead he tosses out a few pre-written words and proceeds to indulge himself.

I had a different take on the “watch this drive” comment.
I felt it was more along the lines of “hey a$$hole I’m trying to take some needed recreational time, now pay attention to that instead of looking for a sound bite”

And BTW LastRick as noted by Ed he was playing golf on a normal day.

Great to have you back Captain.
This post is dead on target.

Liberals never hold themselves to the same moral and ethical standards that they judge everyone else by.

Their selective outrage is all about scoring political points, distracting from their own failures, and hiding the fact that they offer no competent solutions to today’s challenges.

Ok, then when? I would guess that there will be no time in the next four years when some crisis (however small) is not underway: the NORKs, Iran, Gaza, etc. We can not expect Obama to forgo a personal life because he’s president. I just think we should save the criticism for something more “impressive”.

As for “Watch this drive!”, I thought that it made GW come off as a bit of an a$$hole. On the other hand, scheduling the moment of silence while you’re chili-dipping shows you’re egocentric.

Which is the point of the post.

Liberals constantly railed against Bush for taking time off, accusing him of not taking the worlds problems seriously because he was at his ranch or daring to enjoy other activities.

Michael Moore had to cut and paste Bush’s golf game to give the impression that Bush could care less about people being killed around the Globe.

Bush was accused of practically allowing 9/11 to happen because he spent a few weeks at his ranch in August(even though he worked, brought in foreign dignitaries, and conducted meetings from there).

If it is so okay for the President to enjoy a little time off, where the he!! was all this understanding over the last 8 years.

That is the point of the post.

The obvious hypocrisy and politicizing of every single move Bush made but all of a sudden having all this understanding and maturity now that a democrat is in office.

Hey ed, I noticed that you have a mailbox for people to send in obmamamamama’s screwups…

Questions..

1. Where did you find the 14 Crays necessary to handle the load??

2. Do you have any mail server rules in place.. ie: Stop accepting incoming email after receiving more that 18 billion valid screwups on any given day??

3. Considering the illogical nature of this administration, do you run into any ‘divide by zero’ issues when the AI tries to sort through the incoming messages?

4. Are you aware that if you add BidenGaffes to the incoming mail, the resultant power drain to process all the emails will be such that the beginnings of a black hole will be created thus ending the universe as we know it. ?

A suggestion on the Biden thing… See if you can get a 24×7 webcam on Jumpin Joe… that will cover his daily gaffes.

Baxter Greene on May 26, 2009 at 8:55 AM

I totally agree. But nothing is served by writing an entire blogpost about how Obama was playing golf while the NORKs were warming up and then, in the same breath, screaming: Hey, why didn’t anyone give W some latitude?! That moment is gone, the press (and Moore) gave W hell about Watch-this-drive but it’s done; trying to fight some moral-equivalence golf analogy with the Democrats and the press years later is a waste of our time and energy.

LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 9:00 AM

I should reiterate what I think the real Obamateurism is: scheduling the moment of silence while he’s on the course. He could have chose any time of the day, while he was at Arlington or an elementary school. But he chose to do it at a time when the nature of the sport itself (golf) requires almost perfect silence. Which showed, hey I’m already going to be silent at that point of the day, let’s do it then.

LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 9:03 AM

He’s just emulating his hero, Abraham Lincoln. Didn’t Abe go shoot a few rounds after his speech at Gettysburg?

As others oft point out — if this was President Bush, we’d never hear the end of it. The classic case is how strongly the left (and their erstwhile allies, the 9/11 truthers) criticized Bush for spending an extra seven minutes reading to elementary school children (scheduled as part of his official duties) as 9/11 unfolded.

With respect to Korea and international crises, I doubt that President Obama’s full attention would have made any difference in the result or in anything the UN or the US did in the short term. Ditto for Bush’s seven minutes, although the left will never admit that.

Obama is not a regular citizen any more, and he has yet to figure that out. Playing a round or two on a national holiday dedicated to remembering our war dead is not Presidential. He has the chance to redeem himself on Veterans’ Day — but not by shooting a hole in one.

I disagree.

Liberals were very effective in beating down the President and the Republican party with this type of drive by slander
that received 24/7 news cycle hits from late night comedians, news broadcasters, hollywood entertainers, and political pundits.

If Bush flubbed a word (such as nuclear) it made the MSM rounds and over time, all of these constant cut-and-paste attacks, left the populace with the impression that Bush was a bumbling idiot.

Obama has more than surpassed the Dan Quayle “potato” moment with his friends in the press proclaiming “Obama’s perfect,we have nothing to make fun of” bullsh!t.

laying back and not exposing this obvious hypocrisy allows liberals to continue using these methods as a tool to beat down their opposition.

As much as I support Bush, his failure to fight back and expose liberals for their lies and hypocrisy was a huge mistake and hurt the Republican party.

To lay back and not fight against this hypocrisy now would be to continue this mistake.

The Captain and many, many, other pundits and writers should continue to expose liberals for their hypocrisy and politicizing all matters domestic and international if we are going to negate the “Bush did 9/11″ and “Bush lied” idiocy that we have had to endure over the last 8 years.

Today’s Homeland Security is twisted to propagandize Socialism, round up conservatives and veterans while preening the Fascists.

Obama just WON’T do what is right. He is hell bent on destroying our stability plank by plank to feed his bonfire.

Bailing out Chrysler & GM and the banks wasn’t enough. Forcing them all into bankruptcy isn’t enough. Forcing Chrysler to merge with Fiat while Fiat is readying to close isn’t enough. Forcing bond investors to take pennies on the dollar wasn’t enough. Firing the CEO and placing The One’s chosen designate isn’t enough. Taking all the Union funds and trusts from members for Obama’s discretionary spending wasn’t enough. Forcing all Republican donor Chrysler dealers closed isn’t enough.

Regardless of the topic or target, there will NEVER BE ENOUGH to satisfy the insatiable global tyrant.

Since he’s left office, I keep noting exactly how many men Bush’s generation IN THE MEDIA and in politics persist in the ol’ pronunciation from childhood. It’s not so much a mispronunciation as a mark of a generation, those who practiced the bomb drills in elementary school. George W. Bush had a fantastic sense of humor, and let it roll to keep from being overwhelmed. It was like GWB tossed the media candy with his “strategery” and being the juvenile delinquents they were/are, they bit the hand that fed them.

Mr. Malleable’s uh-ah-uh-uh-uh eloquence is so atrocious. Couple his nuanced stutter with Obama’s Afganistan vs. pahkeestahn side-by-side gaffs denoting who counts and who doesn’t so far as The One is concerned.

It’s a sad state of monopolized affairs is the understatement of this presidency.

maverick muse on May 26, 2009 at 9:41 AM

Even then people may still be so snowed by the “Bush’s fault” mantra that we may not be able to take it back.

crazy_legs on May 26, 2009 at 9:32 AM

All the more reason to shout that down every time it gets repeated.

Don’t permit the whole cloth fabrication of Obama’s audacity of hope to be sold without forcing historical fact back into context in each day’s dialogue with/against Leftists.

maverick muse on May 26, 2009 at 9:45 AM

To lay back and not fight against this hypocrisy now would be to continue this mistake.

Baxter Greene on May 26, 2009 at 9:20 AM

The Right is outnumbered as the Left always has help from the media.

LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 9:37 AM

I agree,
we are outnumbered.
But surrender is out of the question.

The same “5 minute news bite” person that was so easily persuaded by the liberal news cycle will also be disenchanted with this current administration in a quick hurry.

The “hope and change” idiocy that was sold left some pretty seriously high expectations that are not going to be met.

Higher energy costs, higher taxes, higher debt, and higher job losses hit Americans directly in the pocket book and depress their somewhat “spoiled” lifestyles.

Combined with the failure of “smart power” which is just another word for international capitulation and abandoning our allies, and you have a recipe for disaster.

If Republicans stay strong, keep exposing these failures, and provide solid alternatives, the public will swing the other way.

History shows this.
So no quarter to Obama or his supporters.

What do you expect from a man that speaks Argentinean and has no idea who his Secretary of Defense is.

It’s like he is in the Special Olympics or something.

Baxter Greene on May 26, 2009 at 9:53 AM

I haven’t felt that. In fact, I wish he would take more time off, like say 1200 days or so.

LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 9:34 AM

Heh!!

Baxter Greene on May 26, 2009 at 9:54 AM

Obama is a Hole in One.

Loxodonta

I thought he was A-hole #1.

SKYFOX on May 26, 2009 at 9:57 AM

As a veteran, I’m not suprised that a coke head, foriegn born, slective service dodging, bastard (as in abandonded by his father) would spend his Memorial Day doing exactly that.

It doesn’t even bother me. I’m just happy he doesn’t walk around Arlington pissing on graves, which if it didn’t cost him so many approval rating points, he’d be likely to do.

Hog Wild on May 26, 2009 at 11:12 AM

What does Obama care?

He has disdain, and contempt, for our men, and women in uniform, and while he’s safely in the skies, or in a bunker, if a nuclear attack hits….he’s covered. So what if a few million turn to dust?

It helps depleting this over populated earth….and democrats just love to decide who lives, and who dies.

capejasmine on May 26, 2009 at 12:19 PM

It’s nice that someone on his staff finally told him what Memorial Day really means.

Jaynie59 on May 26, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Obama, aids said, made a silent prayer?

Was it to Allah or God?
Did he say it in Austrian?
Vote for safety for all 57 states?
Pray for those who died and he sees in the audience?
The special olympic’s bowlers?

You gotta love the comedy he provides, if it was not so depressing.

You mean 2012 likely democrat votes?

dthorny on May 26, 2009 at 1:20 PM

Second, Obama chose to spend Memorial Day just like hundreds or thousands of people I saw yesterday in Myrtle Beach, ie. hitting the course.
LastRick on May 26, 2009 at 8:19 AM

Rick, Rick, Rick, you are missing the point. Yes, many other people were playing golf and doing other recreational activities on their day off yesterday, however, they were not elected President of the United States. POTUS should be held to a higher standard, his job is 24/7, 365 days a year. Yes, he should be allowed to take days off, and have leisure time, and vacations, but his timing, as usual, is lousy. He is representing our Country as our leader, and Memorial Day is not the day he should be playing golf, especially when crucial foreign policy events like occurred yesterday, are happening. As has been typical with this President, he and his administration are lacking in judgement. President Bush could not even take a working day off on a non-event Saturday without being criticized, yet Obama does this? It all comes down to class, or lack thereof, and protocol, which this President has shown to know nothing about.

Susanboo on May 26, 2009 at 1:23 PM

As Mr. Obama himself stated on Memorial Day:

What is thing, this sense of duty? What tugs at a person until he or she says “Send me”? Why, in an age when so many have acted only in pursuit of the narrowest self-interest, have the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of this generation volunteered all that they have on behalf of others? Why have they been willing to bear the heaviest burden?

Whatever it is, they felt some tug; they answered a call; they said “I’ll go.” That is why they are the best of America, and that is what separates them from those of us who have not served in uniform — their extraordinary willingness to risk their lives for people they never met.

Now tell me again why he ran against Mr. McCain? Tell me again why he won?

unclesmrgol on May 26, 2009 at 1:24 PM

The “do as I say, not as I do” President.

Susanboo on May 26, 2009 at 1:34 PM

From this morning’s statement by Obama mominating Sotomayor:

“…members of our highest court…..are charged with the vital task of applying principles put to paper more than twenty centuries ago…”

Twenty centuries??? Well I guess that would cover the Ten Comandments but make that stone tablets..not paper. Is this an Obamaism or a Teleprompterism and is there a difference?

GreenBlade on May 26, 2009 at 1:39 PM

To those of you who believe the President is entitled to take Memorial Day off, let me offer my opinion.

Our presidents are able to hold their office because of the ultimate sacrifice made by the men and women. Without those sacrifices we would not have an elected president. If, indeed we even still had a country.
As the Commander In Chief of the armed forces,Memorial Day should not be a day off. It should be a work day. A work day unlike any other. It should be a day for him to show at the highest level the ultimate in respect and honor for those who have died for this great country and for those who now serve, prepared if necessary to give their all.

To my mind a sitting President, treating Memorial Day as lightly as Obama has, shows a complete disdain for those who serve and total lack of sensitivity.

The thing about golf is that you can burn off the excess nervous energy that leads to pacing, it gives time to think about what your working on, and the moments of concentration on the shot helps break the cycle when thinking in circles.
.
Now if we can just get Obama-nation to start thinking how to save the nation, instead of how to destroy it.

darktood on May 26, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Hey Barry ,you want to do something in observance of Veterans on Memorial Day,(since you don’t know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day)….never mind …I don’t want to get banned.
