Did DEI Cause the Louvre Heist?

Come on, man. Was Peter Sellers the head of security at The Louvre?

Were the powers that be at the world's most famous museum expecting Cato to pop out and use his amazing martial arts skills to defend against a Pink Panther-like set of thieves?

Of course not. The likely origin of the failure was that the head of security, hired just last year to great fanfare because she was the first woman to hold the position, was a DEI hire.

The heist was ridiculous

It took just eight minutes.

Thieves broke into the Louvre on Sunday while tourists were perusing art. They made off with jewelry said to be of incalculable worth.

My colleagues have been reporting on one of the most dramatic heists this century — how thieves pulled it off, why they did it and what precedents there are for this kind of brazen burglary. Here’s what we know.

How they did it

With a truck, a ladder, a disc cutter and some scooters.

At 9:30 a.m., the thieves parked a truck under the windows of the Apollo Gallery. Then they climbed up an electric ladder from the back of the truck. (This truck-mounted ladder — a monte-meubles — may look odd or suspicious to non-French people, but it’s a pretty common sight on the streets of Paris, where it is used to lift bulky furniture through apartment windows.)

To break into the gallery, they carved the glass with the disc cutter, setting off the security alarm. They threatened guards with the disc cutter and smashed two display cases while the Louvre’s staff members evacuated the museum.

The robbers grabbed a royal sapphire necklace, a royal emerald necklace and a diadem worn by Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III. See their entire haul here.

By 9:38, the thieves had mounted two high-powered scooters waiting for them outside. They drove away.

It went like this:

I'm surprised they couldn't just order the jewels on Amazon; the heist was so easy

The Louvre museum's security chief has been accused of being a diversity hire who put the "cultural heritage" of France at risk following the theft of "priceless" jewellery.

Dominique Buffin has worked as Director of Public Reception and Surveillance at the Paris museum since last year.

But Ms Buffin, who has previously worked in the police and at France's Ministry of Culture, has been accused of being hired by museum director Laurence Des Cars as part of a "feminisation policy".

The pair have both faced calls to resign over the brazen heist at the museum on Sunday, which saw a number of French crown jewels stolen.

Apparently, the hiring of Buffin was a matter of great pride for the museum and was hailed as an important moment in the history of gender equality.

What it wound up being was a symbol of hiring based on DEI is a stupendously bad idea.

Ironically, none of us actually knows if Buffin was especially incompetent--it could be that complacency has been the rule at the museum for decades, and Buffin was merely one in a long string of incompetents.

But one cannot escape the belief that the hiring was not based on special competence, but on the symbolic necessity of looking appropriately woke. When there is a changing of the guard, the first order of business should be a review of what works and what doesn't in an organization.

Marion Maréchal, member of the European Parliament and niece of ex-leader of the National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, said France has become the "laughingstock of the world" because of the "ridiculous theft".

She wrote to X: "This humiliation cannot go unanswered: Rachida Dati must demand the immediate resignation of the museum's director Laurence Des Cars and the security chief Dominique Buffin, whom she appointed - Le Monde was delighted - as part of a feminisation policy.

"Evidently, at the cost of forgoing competence and endangering the cultural heritage of our Nation."

Jordan Bardella, the now president of National Rally, branded the heist at the world's most visited museum an "intolerable humiliation".

Humiliation indeed. And not just for France, but for DEI itself. The "business" argument for DEI is that diversity brings new perspectives and increases value. That claim has never been shown by the evidence, and is completely destroyed by the number of woke disasters, of which this is just the most recent and spectacular.

I have no reason to believe that women are incapable of doing such a job--presumably the head of security is not roaming the floors of the museum tacking thieves. They are hired to make strategies, not to execute tactical operations.

But it's clear that Buffin was not hired for having any special skill, but for show, and the show turned out to be one that could have been put on at Ford's theater.
