As Ed wrote this morning, the hypocrisy of Democrats on the Iran strikes has been spectacular. 

Rather than approving of, staying silent about, or expressing dissent against Trump's strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, the Democrats are expressing outrage that Trump struck without Congressional approval.

Time to impeach! 

Democrats who celebrated every strike Obama made, including the disastrous Libya and Syria adventures, are suddenly outraged that Trump made very limited strikes against a country that has been engaged in a gray zone war with us for decades. 

It is breathtaking to have people like Ben Rhodes and Hillary Clinton express outrage at Trump's lawlessness, given their records. 

Congressional Democrats who backed Obama to the hilt on the Libya disaster are worried sick that Trump striking an actual dangerous enemy that daily asserts its goal is to kill America is a threat to our democracy. Libya, you may recall, abandoned its nuclear ambitions and its terrorist tactics, and our intervention there was never predicated on taking out a threat. It was "humanitarianism" that justified turning Libya into a failed state with slave markets. 

Iran is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers, worked assiduously to ensure our efforts in Iraq were foiled, and funds proxies that endanger US interests worldwide. Not to mention that they send hit squads to assassinate Americans, including President Trump.

The case for bombing Iran's nuclear facilities was very clear cut, and there was nothing illegal about Trump's doing so. We can argue the wisdom of doing so, given the potential consequences, but not the rationale that led to the decision. Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons, declares its intention to destroy the United States, has proven willing to take military action against us, and its capability to do so needed to be taken out. 

Simple. Clear cut. If Biden had done this they would be applauding, and only a few Republicans would have questioned his right to do so--the same ones who will question Trump's decision, and for the same reason. 

Dan Turrentine, the Democrat half of Mark Halperin's excellent 2Way show, hit the nail on the head about how far off the rails the Democrats have gone:

It was too depressing to write this last night, after we got off air, so I went to bed. But, it needs to be said by more Democrats: this was not an impeachable offense, and Trump did not need congressional approval for one precision attack under the circumstances, just as Obama did not when striking Bin Laden. Why can’t our Party just say it’s great we achieved the objective and destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites, god bless the soldiers who carried this out and made it home safely, god bless our country, military, allies, and we look forward to a full intel briefing. 🇺🇸. If one must then assert Congressional authority at the moment, add that any escalation will require congressional approval.  And if you must, express concern for where this may go and what might come next.  

But, for so many in my Party to knee jerk with unhinged calls for impeachment - and sadly omit in their statement support for Iran not having nuclear weapons, which has been a principle of our Party for 40 years -is truly TDS.

It's difficult to predict what the secondary effects of this strike will be. Iran has announced its intention to close the Strait of Hormuz, and at least for a time they will be able to do so without the naval assets that most certainly will lose. Iran has substantial drone and shorter range missile capabilities, and it will take time to degrade them. 

Democrats could have pointed to the uncertainties, the threat of escalating oil prices, destabilizing the Middle East, or any of a number of reasons to oppose the attack should they have so chosen. 

But legality? That is perhaps the stupidest argument they could trot out. 

So of course they chose to go there.
