Labour's Answer to Cratering Election Prospects: Eliminate Voter ID

Elon Musk is, of course, right when he says that there is only one reason to oppose Voter ID, and that is to cheat in elections.

I've heard countless reasons advanced for why asking people to present ID in order to exercise the franchise is horrible and oppressive, but they are all a distraction from this basic fact. My favorite, of course, is the racist claim that black people are far too stupid to be able to get an ID card, or that poor people cannot afford them. The first claim is ridiculous and offensive, the second somehow is never refuted even when proponents offer to visit people in their homes to issue free IDs.

When I worked briefly at the Minnesota legislature one of the state reps worked tirelessly to pass a voter ID law and built a Rube Goldberg bill that literally answered every challenge to its fairness. Free IDs, home visits, assistance of every kind you could imagine, and none of it made a difference. Democrats didn't want a solution to any problem: they wanted the ability to cheat.

The ability to cheat does not guarantee victory in every race, but it does ensure that in marginal races the odds are stacked in the Democrats' favor. Here in Minnesota, the Democrats won a seat by a few votes, and somehow, 20 ballots were shredded and left uncounted.

In Great Britain, a voter ID law was passed when the Tories were in charge, and now that Labour is in deep, deep trouble and as popular as STDs, Keir Starmer is scheming to eliminate Voter ID. Starmer is deeply concerned about saving democracy, and nothing says "democracy saved" by allowing every Abdul, Mohammed, and Amir vote.

Labour is considering sweeping changes to voting laws, and those changes just happen to completely change the electorate.

Labour was last night accused of plotting a shameless bid to 'rig' the next election by sweeping away laws to prevent voter fraud and allowing millions of foreign nationals to vote.

Speculation is mounting in Westminster that ministers are drawing up radical reforms that will dramatically overhaul the way elections are held – and potentially 'lock in' a Labour Party majority.

The Government is already planning to extend the right to vote to 16 and 17-year-olds, with legislation expected later this year.

Sixteen-year-olds voting. I wonder what that is about?

Now the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a Left-wing think-tank closely aligned with Labour, has called for the 'removal or relaxation' of rules that force people to show photographic identification before voting.

Introduced in 2022, the rules were designed to protect postal and proxy voting from fraud and crack down on vote intimidation.

The IPPR, however, warns turn-out is falling among non-graduates and renters and says lessening the photo ID requirements, or axing them, would 'reduce inequality at UK general elections'.

Its report adds: 'Letting current trends in political inequality play out would be an obvious act of self-harm for this Government.'

"For this government." They mean, of course, the Labour Party.

"Equity," "Fairness," and all the other liberal buzzwords are just synonyms for shoving power and resources to liberal constituencies. They sound nice but are propaganda words and nothing more.

The report says: 'Around five million permanent taxpaying residents of the UK do not have the right to vote in its elections.

'This is because citizens of countries other than the UK, Ireland and Commonwealth nations cannot register to vote, regardless of how long they have been resident in the UK.

'There is clear need for a wider political conversation about the notion of citizenship and voting rights in the UK.'

The IPPR also says the Government could explore automatically registering voters 'shortly before their 16th birthdays' – a move that would add 700,000 young people to the electoral register each year.

Labour is worried that they can't win if only adult Britons can vote--and they are likely right--so they want a new electorate. That's all this is. That is all that any opposition to Voter ID is: shaping the political battlefield by shaping the electorate.
