DC crime surge inspires DC Attorney General to target gas stoves as dangerous

Washington D.C. has become a crime-ridden hellhole. It has gotten so bad that Members of Congress are getting assaulted, young girls are getting shot in the crossfire, and shootings per weekend are counted in job lots.

Violent crime is surging. Not merely increasing, but rising so rapidly that even the media is calling it a surge.

On April 21, eight people were wounded in shootings in the neighborhood of Southeast D.C., including a 12-year-old girl. None of the injuries were life-threatening, police said at the time. According to the latest city statistics, overall crime in the nation’s capital so far this year is up 25% compared to 2022. Homicides are up 20% and motor vehicle theft is up 106%, the numbers show.

So what is the DC Attorney General spending his time on? Let’s look at the “latest news” on his website to find out!

As you can see from the dates, this isn’t some static website. The AG is a busy guy, pumping out press releases at a blistering pace. He is working on increasing legal services for criminals, dealing with business practices, and housing code violations, and working with other AGs around the country to ensure that gas stoves are eliminated.

Perhaps the Attorney General isn’t the guy who is supposed to deal with public safety issues? Maybe his job is regulating household appliances, and I am being unfair to him.

Oops. No, crime is his bailiwick too. Not that he seems to care much. He isn’t seeking prosecutions, but “justice,” which apparently means social justice, not justice for the victims of crime. He is, apparently, interested in “preventing” crimes, although given the statistics listed above one might wonder whether he has time amid his other priorities.

Yes, you too can be assured that he is working very hard to ensure that restaurants don’t tack on a service fee and that Mcdonald’s isn’t making workers sign non-compete contracts. You can even get free tax preparation, as long as you survive the coming long, hot summer. It’s good to see that he is working hard for the citizens of DC.

“When you talk specifically about the violent crime, early in this year, we had a couple of cases where we saw individuals just shooting people, shooting each other for no reason,” Contee said. “Individuals who are unable to resolve disputes, simple arguments that turned into homicides. Why? Because people have access to illegal firearms. And when they have access to illegal firearms, they use them, unfortunately.”

He also argues that there has been a lack of prosecutions. Last year, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia declined to prosecute about two-thirds of people arrested by Metropolitan police.

Now the AG is not the US Attorney, so the lack of prosecution is not all his fault. But Brian Schwab is doing his part to help the criminal element by ensuring that more money is going to legal services to ensure they get a fair shake.

And there are those gas stoves that are stalking people in the streets. Clearly, they present a major public safety issue, so it’s good that he is putting in the time to ensure that they aren’t beating up Congresswomen or shooting young girls.

The DC political establishment is all-in on the “guns shoot people” explanation, but that leads to a question: if guns are the cause of violent crimes, why are violent crimes skyrocketing? Why is car theft up 106% in ONE YEAR?

Those guns are very busy. They used to be “mostly peaceful,” but suddenly got the idea that it was time to unleash hell on the residents of DC. It has nothing to do with public policy that is all about going soft on criminals and defunding the police.

Besides, gas stoves are violent too. We have to fix that problem first.

Liberals keep insisting that the problem of crime is overblown and that the real priority should be asking criminals to be nicer.

Yeah, right.

The real priority should be stopping criminals from committing more crimes. America went into a moral panic led by the Left, inventing a narrative that White Supremacist Americans were using the criminal justice system as a mechanism to control black and brown “bodies.” It was long past time that we reigned in the police, even eliminate them, and quit prosecuting criminals for crimes.

A crime surge was the inevitable result. And, to be clear, most Democrats still vote for these policies. In my county–Hennepin County Minnesota–the newly elected County Attorney is refusing to prosecute criminals. Many prosecutors are refusing to prosecute most illegal gun possession charges because they are inequitable.

If anybody tells you Democrats want guns off the streets they are lying; they want guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens. Criminals? Not so much.

America’s crime surge is by design and the only reason some Democrats are rethinking policy is that it is hurting them at the polls, or in the case of a few, getting them personally assaulted.

The largest group of victims, of course, are not the elite but the poor, primarily in minority communities. Democrats don’t seem to care about anything as mundane as a poor Black voter. As long as they keep voting for Democrats, the Democrats will keep feeding them into the meat grinder and blaming Republican racism, which they claim is the real cause.

Democrats have bigger fish to fry, after all. Gas stoves are still legal.
