President Trump and First Lady Melania traveled to Paris Friday at the invitation of French President Macron to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The first event scheduled was a ceremony at Aisne Marne American Cemetery. Unfortunately, the weather was bad and the Trumps had to cancel. You would have thought this decision was the beginning of a world crisis if you were reading angry posts on social media.

It is not often that I give a journalist credit these days but in this case, I do give a salute to Bloomberg’s Jennifer Jacobs. Her tweets were very helpful in actually giving the reason behind Trump’s decision. While angry Never Trumpers and their allies in the press were bashing President Trump for bad form in Europe, Jacobs reported that the trip was canceled due to the weather. Rain forced his helicopter to be grounded and Secret Service nixed the trip to the cemetery.

Fact: White House has lost so much credibility that some don’t believe info it shares.

Reporters can check with Secret Service sources on security reasons one of Trump’s 2 visits to U.S. graves was canceled, but world will still go nuts calling it international embarrassment.

You’ll note that Ms. Jacobs knew that the haters would “go nuts calling it an international embarrassment.” That’s exactly what they did. The fake news just doesn’t stop, even overseas. President Trump may be lacking in some areas of traditional political behavior but dissing the military isn’t one of those. Anyone who has ever listened as the man speaks knows he has great respect for the American military and the sacrifices made.

Here is a good example of overreach by a regular critic of President Trump from an alleged conservative fired from the George W. Bush administration.  He was even wrong in claiming the president was in a hotel – President and Mrs. Trump are staying at the American ambassador’s residence.

“It’s incredible that a president would travel to France for this significant anniversary — and then remain in his hotel room watching TV rather than pay in person his respects to the Americans who gave their lives in France for the victory gained 100 years ago tomorrow,” David Frum, who served as a speechwriter to President George W. Bush, wrote in tweets. Trump is actually staying at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Paris.

And, piling on his two cents to the outrage machine, Winston Churchill’s grandson was none too pleased by President Trump’s cancellation.

Don’t worry. There was an American presence. Chief of Staff Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dunford both attended. The disgraced Bush speechwriter, however, also gave his suggestion that a last-minute motorcade could have been arranged. Really? In the god-awful traffic of Paris? The cemetery is 50 miles outside of Paris. I don’t think that is conducive to last-minute scrambling for the president and his entourage. Even the reporters traveling with President Trump have been complaining about the time spent stuck in Paris traffic.

Trump met with Macron as tensions are heightened due to the French president’s suggestion in a radio interview that Europe develops its own military prepared to defend the continent from threats from Russia, China, or even the United States. The young, naive president implied that America is a threat, it would appear. He uttered this wrong-headed nonsense just before Trump flew to Paris to commemorate American lives lost in defending France and Europe in World War I. Let that sink in.

Macron claims he was misunderstood in his radio remarks. After President Trump tweeted that maybe Macron should just worry about paying his country’s fair share in NATO dues, Macron said he was just suggesting that European countries be more self-sufficient in defense. He even said he was recommending Trump’s suggestion that they shoulder more of the financial burden. Oh brother. President Trump and Melania had lunch with President and Mrs. Macron at the Elysee Palace after the two leaders met. That must have been a bit awkward.

President Trump will attend a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe Sunday with other world leaders. Marking the centenary, President Macron will deliver a speech in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the arc at 11:00 A.M.

It would appear that the honeymoon between President Trump and President Macron may be over. Given his careless remarks recently, the French president may well consider just thanking America for the fact he isn’t delivering his remarks Sunday in German.
