If you’ve been reading the news in the past two months word that Democrats intend to go scorched-earth on Donald Trump probably doesn’t come as much of a shock. Many of these same Democrats decided not to attend Trump’s inauguration and some have even called him an illegitimate president. Other Democrats are already busy promoting “the resistance” to his administration. But now, apparently, the kid gloves are really going to come off. Politico reports:

What began as a high-minded discussion about how to position the Democratic Party against President Donald Trump appears to be nearing its conclusion. The bulk of the party has settled on a scorched-earth, not-now-not-ever model of opposition…

At a forum this week for candidates running to be the next DNC chair, the very idea that the party should try to work with the new president was dismissed as absurd.

“That’s a question that’s absolutely ridiculous,” said New Hampshire party Chairman Raymond Buckley, when asked whether the Democratic Party should try to work with Trump where it can find opportunities…

Even so, strident anti-Trump Democrats worry that deal-makers like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will try to find agreements with the new president — concerns that have been heightened by the Cabinet confirmation process, in which Schumer has prioritized eight nominees rather than trying to gum up all the picks at once.

So the concern, if you can believe it, is that Sen. Chuck Schumer is not obstructionist enough six days into Trump’s presidency. Consider that complaint from Democrats in light of the Weekly Standard report Monday that Schumer had originally agreed to allow a vote on Trump’s pick for CIA Director but reneged on that promise at the last minute:

According to six sources familiar with the negotiations over Pompeo’s confirmation, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told Republican leaders that he would allow Pompeo to be confirmed by voice vote on Inauguration Day, along with two other Trump nominees who have national security responsibilities. But Schumer broke his promise, these sources say, and offered an insulting excuse for having done so.

Schumer’s reversal led to a heated confrontation with Sen. Tom Cotton. When Schumer stated that Cotton hadn’t been around 8 years previously when Obama’s picks were confirmed, Cotton replied, “Eight years ago, I was getting my ass shot at in Afghanistan.” When Cotton asked why Schumer had reneged on his promise to confirm Trump’s CIA pick, Schumer claimed he had only been speaking for himself, not the other members of his party.

Again, Democrats are now worried Schumer is too willing to compromise and are demanding a harder line. The problem, of course, is that they don’t have the votes to really block anyone without Republican help.
