U.S. officials: "Fairly extensive" porn stash found in Bin Laden's compound

The first thought I had when news broke that we got him was to wonder what he’d been doing with himself for the past 10 years. Mystery solved.

In fairness, I’ve always heard that “Girls Gone Wild: Riyadh” is the hottest GGW.

The pornography recovered in bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.

Reports from Abbottabad have said that bin Laden’s compound was cut off from the Internet or other hard-wired communications networks. It is unclear how compound residents would have acquired the pornography.

They would have acquired it the same way they communicated with jihadis in the field — via courier. Read this AP piece on how Bin Laden managed to send e-mails while eluding western detection. He had a computer, presumably equipped with a DVD drive, and he knew how to use it. All he had to do was pop in a disc and “self-detonate.” That’s assuming, of course, that the porn was for him; remember that he had two sons with him, Khaled and Hamza, both in their early 20s and neither able to do much dating under the circumstances. Khaled ended up being killed by the SEALs but no one’s sure where Hamza is or whether he escaped. Maybe he was in the bathroom during the raid?

All of this is comedy gold, needless to say, but I don’t get the people who think it’s some sort of, er, master stroke of U.S. propaganda. Not a single one of Bin Laden’s followers will believe the porn story, I’d bet, and there’s really no way to prove we’re telling the truth. It’ll be dismissed as more of the kufr’s lies aimed at humiliating the blessed sheikh Osama Bin Blahblah, etc. Which is fine by me — I don’t care if they’re angry. But the administration does care, or else they wouldn’t be resisting demands to release the Bin Laden death photos. Gloating over Osama’s death, we’re told, will only increase the risk to our troops in the field, so let’s not make it any harder for them by spiking the football. Well, we’re spiking it here too via sexual embarrassment and unprovable allegations of grave religious sin, and given jihadis’ insane psychological hang-ups about women and cleanliness, we’re arguably spiking it in a way that’s even more incendiary than showing them the kill shot. Again, that’s A-OK by me, but I’m not sure how the White House reconciles these two positions.

Speaking of incoherent White House messaging, here’s Bob Gates warning America that Navy SEALs and their families are now at risk for retaliation thanks to the media frenzy over the raid. You can thank our semi-moronic vice president for revealing which unit carried out the operation, but plenty of other administration officials have been happy to share operational details that captured the press’s imagination. What did they think would happen to U.S. servicemen, either the SEALs or others, once they did so?
