Yeah, they got me. I’m only a man, people. A sad, fanboy chump of a man.
What’s that you say? I can now bore myself with Sudoku while listening to Pandora? Great. Here’s my credit card, Steve.
Apple unveiled details of its next-generation iPhone operating system Thursday in a press event at the company’s headquarters here.
The new operating system, iPhone OS 4, will be released to developers this week and to consumers this summer. It will give developers access to calendar, photo library, still image and video data, and includes features aimed at helping apps run faster.
As expected, the new OS will support multitasking of apps…
“It’s really easy to implement multitasking in a way that drains battery life. If you don’t do it just right your phone’s going to feel sluggish and your battery life is going to go way down. We’ve figured out how to implement multitasking of third-party apps and avoid those things.”
For the quick rundown of new features, including the tantalizing possibility of an improved camera in the next model (video? please?), see Gizmodo. Apple’s been great thus far about extending OS upgrades to older models of the iPhone, but that ends now: Only the latest version, the 3GS, will be able to run 4.0. If, heaven forbid, you’ve got a first-generation silverbacked beauty like a certain sad fanboy chump I might mention, then the time has at last come to pony up. And why not? I don’t use VoIP, I don’t need the real-time GPS tracker, and the built-in iPod already allows for background audio when you’re using apps, which means my multitasking needs are almost nil — but I bet the new model will look awesome. That has to be worth a few hundred bucks. Right, Onion?
Engadget has photos from today’s presentation, but if you’re interested in the multitasking demo, stick with the clip below. Exit question: Are 12 percent of Americans really going to buy an iPad? I realize that it’s going to revolutionize health care or something, but come on.
