Conyers's wife cops plea to federal bribery charges -- as Conyers drops probe of ACORN

You’ll remember Mrs. C as the nice lady whose juvenile nastiness to her colleagues was so appalling, it earned a public rebuke from a 12-year-old. As it happens, she’s a crook, too.

But a crook with a very influential husband.

Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said, “The defendant now stands convicted.”

The one count of conspiring to commit bribery is punishable for up to five years in prison…

Goodman, who represented the City Council in its fight to oust ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, said the city charter requires a council member to step down “the minute he or she is convicted of a felony. In federal court, that process is complete at the sentencing.”

No resignation letter has been submitted by Conyers to Detroit City Council as of this morning, according to the council clerk’s office, Council President Ken Cockrel Jr.’s office, and council’s legal office.

Travel back in time now to March 20th of this year, when John Conyers shocked the world by declaring at a committee hearing that it was time to investigate charges that Team Obama had slipped ACORN a list of its donors to be hit up for donations. I was bowled over; if you read the story, so were you. Why would a hard-left liberal Democrat threaten to make trouble for the guy who’s, er … in charge of the people who are prosecuting his wife?

You’ll be glad to know that, as of this morning, on the very day his wife’s copped a plea to federal charges, he’s no longer threatening to make trouble. Evidently the “powers that be” oppose it. Ace reads between the lines and figures this means Mrs. C’s sentence will be no longer than three months. I’d guess 60 days. Exit question: Think Barry appreciates Conyers’s ability to play hardball “the Chicago way”?
