Man bites dog: Conyers troubled by ACORN allegations, calls for probe

posted at 5:13 pm on March 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Turns out they might be kind of shady. Who knew?

Mr. Conyers, Michigan Democrat and fierce partisan, suggested a congressional probe after scathing testimony about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) during a hearing on various voting issues related to the 2008 presidential election.

Mr. Conyers called the accusations “a pretty serious matter.”

“I think that it would be something that would be worth our time,” he said during Thursday’s hearing. “We’ve never had one person representing ACORN before the committee. … I think in all fairness we ought to really examine it.”

The testimony by Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh accused the nonprofit group of violating tax, campaign-finance and other laws by, among other things, sharing with the Barack Obama campaign a list of the Democrat’s maxed-out campaign donors so ACORN could use it to solicit them for a get-out-the-vote drive.

Follow the link for details on an exciting new program known as “muscle for the money,” in which communities “organize” in front of protest targets until they’re paid to go away, and the inevitable Democratic pushback against Conyers’s surprising call for an investigation. Exit question: ACORN and Team Barry exchanging donor information? I’m shocked, shocked.

Okay. Now THIS, clearly, qualifies as a Rick Roll. ;)

community organizing as racketeering, and Conyers is going to investigate? Now that is interesting.

rob verdi on March 20, 2009 at 5:16 PM

“I think in all fairness we ought to really examine it.”

Non-Congressional Democrat translation = “I think we ought to really pretend to examine them so everybody can be assured they are okay!”

Uhhhh… Are the coming lights on? (fingers crossed)

I have a feeling that Detroit City Council President, Monica Conyers, will have a little talk with John about this tonight.

There is NO cannibalism in the Royal Navy.

And by “NO” I mean “very little”.

If there turns out to be, we shall immmediatley conduct an investigation…and hush the whole thing up.

Exactly!

Something like having the fox guard the hen house, only in reverse. Conyers is a (s)tool.

singlemalt_18 on March 20, 2009 at 5:22 PM

Is Conyers angry that acorn isn’t working on his re-election campaign.

HornetSting on March 20, 2009 at 5:23 PM

Do we have a Fitzmas RICO pool for Acorn yet?

I’m not sure whom that applies to here.

Upstater85 on March 20, 2009 at 5:23 PM

Conyers must be a racist.

ctmom on March 20, 2009 at 5:25 PM

Wait, I always get these two names mixed up, but this time I really am confused…Conyers or Cornyn.
What am I missing here…something else is going on, like has ACORN “stiffed” him? Or is ACORN moving into NAACP territory? There is something more then what is being reported.

ctmom on March 20, 2009 at 5:25 PM

I’m starting to think that way… We need to probe Conyers for his unsavory views on minorities.

Upstater85 on March 20, 2009 at 5:26 PM

I am going to go down the conspiracy root. Is it possible Obama understood how much damage the groups “reclaiming” activities were so damaging, that the dems warned them, they said no and in consequence to their insubordination they are being cracked down on with the very real threat of being jailed?

rob verdi on March 20, 2009 at 5:27 PM

If it’s a set-up, Nadler didn’t get the memo… or is it a Punch & Judy show?

Karl on March 20, 2009 at 5:27 PM

This is a way to make an extensive report and the findings will be: there is no there there and ACORN is a patriotic organization that should receive congressional support.

Bingo.

That’s the Conyers we all know and love. He’ll produce a witness who was assaulted by whitey a protester.

If this is on the up-and-up, I’ll be the first to applaud Conyers.

fogw on March 20, 2009 at 5:31 PM

Conyers got money from ACORN, this faux concern will keep anyone from looking for it.

Bishop on March 20, 2009 at 5:36 PM

This is the most sane thing to come out of Washington
in quite some time. It simply can’t be true.

elderberry on March 20, 2009 at 5:39 PM

You got this all wrong, Ed.

There will be an “investigation.” It will find “no credibility to any of the accusations.” It will forever be repeated that ACORN “got a bad rap” and that “those accusations are just scurrilous nonsense” that have been “discredited.”

Just watch.

Good Lt on March 20, 2009 at 5:41 PM

Are we witnessing this administration going down in flames? They need to stop the hemorrhaging now or the pooch is truly screwed. This is not good for my beloved country. We need a minimal measure of competence from the most powerful gov’t on earth.

Smiles on March 20, 2009 at 5:19 PM

No doubt, but I think that once this gets started there won’t be any stopping it. The dems still think that everyone believes them when the fact is that a large part of America knows that they are nothing but despicable, lying scumbags, and this group is growing. Further, the press is starting to crack. Even they can’t keep up with the new holes in the dike that this adminstration and Congress are creating daily, and the press is dying, too. There’s really only one sort of thing that will start getting newspapers sold again and that is some dirt on the dirtiest and dumbest Federal Government in history. Some of them might be relying on a bailout to save them, but I think this bonus flap even shocked them, a bit.

We’ll see what happens. But you are certainly correct, in my estimation, about the motivation behind this new farce.

ACORN will be exonerated in the MSM.

JoeAvg on March 20, 2009 at 5:50 PM

I agree with those who say this is just a setup to legitimize ACORN.

They would be cleared of all wrong doing and a recommendation will be made that the multi-million (or even billion) money they were originally to get in the first stimulus bill will be offered again. This time, though, it will be with the committe’s endorsement: “See, the committee proved they are a kind and patriotic organization who is only interested in helping the little guy! Let’s give them lots of money and count them as one of President Obama’s service organizations!”

rspock on March 20, 2009 at 5:52 PM

This is all smoke and mirrors, and it smells like crap.
This i nothing except the way to clear ACORN to conduct our census for us, since we are incapable and must put all our trust in ACORN.

It is my belief that the only way the newspaper industry can save itself is to go all Woodward & Bernstein against the big 0 and his cronies, both personal and professional. The warmup act should be against Pelosi, Dodd, Conyers, Frank, and the rest of the liberal cabal.

Anytime there is a ship lost in the Navy, there is a court martial… even if its just to clear those in charge of any taint of wrongdoing…

calguyintexas on March 20, 2009 at 6:04 PM

I agree, though I certainly understand JoeAvg’s doubts that they will do it. They are well-founded doubts, since the MSM is all-in on the bet with The Precedent. Any investigation they do will eventually turn back to their complicity in perpetrating an unbelievable fraud on America, but I’m just hoping that there are still a few individualists left in the industry who will try to make careers on the huge story, or trying to save their papers. I’m trying to stay optimistic.

Apparently there are competing cabals of racketeers within the Democrat party. And some of them are jealous that Acorn is supporting the others.

Lets hope they all succeed in their efforts to damage the others

Looking more and more like my prediction last year is coming true: Without the EVIL Republicans to unite against the factions within the leftist coalition are at each other’s throats and it won’t be long before Washington grinds to a stop due to lack of cooperation.

Browncoatone on March 20, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Sharing a donor list with one and only one of the partisan candidates for a political office makes ACORN the hired dog of that candidate. Doesn’t ACORN have a tax exemption or two riding on its separation from partisan politics? How come they still have them?

[Oh, I shouldn't have bothered asking...]

Conyers “investigating”? Hell, all it would take is one “Spokesman” from ACORN to come in and say “We’re innocent”.

Conyers: “Case closed, time for lunch”.

TN Mom on March 21, 2009 at 12:43 AM

I can’t wait to see how ACORN totally devastates the upcoming Census. In favor of the purely partisan Democrats of course.

Knowing ACORN will be involved in the next US Census in any way, shape, or form with the next Census being unusually important this time around has GOT to be an enticing possibility for some enterprising ethical investigative journalists. That is, if any still exist.

SilverStar830 on March 21, 2009 at 2:47 AM

So Conyers heads up a sham investigation and the ACORN criminals are dubbed ’100% squeaky clean’ – and shame on us for even considering an investiagtion.

This is going nowhere fast.

Mr Purple on March 21, 2009 at 5:08 AM

What Conyers is doing is flying cover by calling all the ACORN reps to Congress, immunizing the testimony, and thus preventing anyone from being prosecuted. Sure, the committee report will emit all the right notes of horror and disgust, but as far as anyone actually being able to DO anything legally, game over.

SDN on March 21, 2009 at 7:50 AM

Conyers wants a probe because ACORN supporters currently control the government. ACORN will be cleared by Congress and that will be used against anyone who criticizes ACORN afterwards. ACORN will become untouchable and well-funded with billions of our tax dollars.

How clueless are you people?!
