A little-discussed fact in the war of propaganda that will, in the long run, be even more important than the battles taking place in Gaza is that the Western Left has coalesced into a unified bloc, uniting with Hamas, Iran, China, and, importantly, Russia.

For years the Left has been obsessed with Russia, for good reasons and mostly bad ones. Russia was at first the boogyman used to discredit Donald Trump. The Russia Russia Russia scandal, wholly invented by the Left, created the impression that Russia was a major force in domestic politics in the United States. Of course it is China that presents the far greater threat both militarily and in its penetration of the US media, academia, and Democrat politics.

Then, with the invasion of Ukraine the hysteria was turned up to 11. I happen to agree that Russia is the bad guy in the conflict, and despite the fact that Ukraine is a corrupt regime, it has by far the better of the argument for being the “good guy.”

Ukrainian flags popped up everywhere, and Democrats and neocons rushed to double down on their hatred of Russia. Now I hate Russia too, because Putin is a thug, but I fail to see it as much of a threat except if the oligarchs suddenly decide to commit suicide by using nuclear weapons. Russia is and has been since the end of the Cold War a second-rate power with a third-rate military. It presents no real threat to the West, of which Ukraine is obviously not a member.

China is a genuine threat at the moment, not just because it has built up a formidable military, but because we depend on it economically and it is strategically located at the fulcrum of the world economy.

With the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war (or more correctly, this particular phase of a long-running war), the Left suddenly shifted its focus on defending Hamas and the Palestinian cause, and in doing so have aligned themselves with an Axis of Enemies: Iran, China, and Russia, all of whom are usually seen as the “bad guys.” At least to sane people.

Russia has for a long time supplied weapons to Hamas, covertly and occasionally openly, and since the outbreak of hostilities been actively engaged in a propaganda campaign against Israel and the West, and in defense of Hamas. Iran, Hamas’ paymaster and ultimate boss, is strongly allied with Russia and supplies it with weapons for its war with Ukraine, and China has been passively and occasionally actively supported Russia’s Ukraine war.

With the outbreak of hostilities the Left made a sudden shift–the new “thing” is supporing Palestinians “by any means necessary,” up to and including embracing terrorists.

In this the Left has embraced Russia, and Russia’s determination to undermine the West. One of the aims of Iran and Hamas is striking out at the political power of “The Big Devil” by attacking “The Little Devil,” Israel. The big target is the United States, and Russia, China and Iran all have us in their sights.

Few, if any, of our adversaries support Hamas because they are desperate to right a terrible wrong and help the Palestinians. Even most Arab countries wish they troublesome terrorists would go away–as demonstrated by the fact that no Arab country wants anything to do with accepting refugees from the war.

An embrace of the Palestinian cause is nothing short of an embrace of Russian goals. Until Israel is gone and the Jews there dead or dispersed Hamas will never be happy. Ask them, and they will say so proudly that killing Jews is their goal.

Because this is so–Israel will never go away, so the conflict will be endless should Hamas survive (and as an ideology it will, because it is Islamism), support for the Palestinian “cause” is simply support for Russia and Iran, with a bone tossed to China.

So here we are: all those “from the River to the Sea” activists are doing little more than supporting Russia’s and Iran’s aims–and hence reversing course at the flip of a mental switch.

This is to be expected, as the Left always needs a new “thing” to keep angry about. So it goes.
