Isn’t this ever so interesting? Another chapter in the book of “Rules Only Apply to Little People” was illustrated yesterday, as the settlement details of the deal between Paramount Global, former head of CBS Les Moonves and New York attorney general Letitia James were released. Besides the amount of cash the two offending parties will pony up, additional juicy nuggets about the Los Angeles Police Department’s role in covering up the Moonves sex scandal were brought to light. Shockingly, not only did they help CBS bury the thing for as long as they possibly could, LAPD tipped them off to begin with!

…The investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James found that a commanding officer with the LAPD had tipped off the former CBS chief executive and other executives in 2018 about sexual assault allegations before they were made public.

According to a filing from James’ office, the LAPD officer left this voice message for CBS executive Ian Metrose: “I know we haven’t talked in a while. I am a captain at LAPD Hollywood. Somebody walked in the station about a couple hours ago and made allegations against your boss regarding a sexual assault. It’s confidential, as you know, but call me, and I can give you some of the details and let you know what the allegation is before it goes to the media or gets out. So all right talk to you after a while. Bye.”

WHUT?! Vice doesn’t massage it quite as neatly as the CNBC report does:

Cops Allegedly Helped Cover Up Sexual Assault Allegations Against Les Moonves

A Los Angeles Police Department captain helped former CBS chief executive Les Moonves cover up multiple allegations of sexual assault, an explosive report from the New York attorney general alleged Wednesday.

Holy SMOKES!!! Nice to have friends in all places.

Let’s take a minute and refresh our memories concerning Mr. Moonves’s scandal. He was, apparently, a busy, powerful man, who became head of CBS in 2016 after many successful years of being credited for keeping CBS “competitive,” with shows like “Big Bang Theory” and “60 Minutes.” Finally reaching the big desk was the pay-off. As Vice says

…In financial records from 2017 and 2018, CBS acknowledged that losing Moonves would likely lead to “adverse financial consequences,” the New York attorney general’s report alleges.

When the CBS head shed got the call from LAPD about what was going down, they freaked. They couldn’t afford to lose the Golden Les.

…The voicemail immediately sent CBS into crisis mode, according to the report. The LAPD captain also allegedly handed over the accuser’s unredacted police report, allowing CBS to investigate her. In one text message, the report reads, a CBS staffer “circulated a public records search containing the name, address, and telephone number of Complainant #1’s son. The body of the message read: ‘Need to research if neighborhood gives clues to need for $.’”

The LAPD captain also allegedly had another police officer call up the accuser and “admonish” her against speaking to the press as CBS tried to protect Moonves and the company’s bottom line. The captain also allegedly assured CBS that no other accusers had come forward, and met with Moonves to discuss the ongoing investigation.

The complaint wasn’t Moonves’ only problem. Another sexual misconduct accusation was, at the time, on the verge of becoming public, and other journalists were looking into allegations against Moonves, according to the report.

How chivalrous! The protect and serve fellas are dragging women in to strongarm them for the bad guys! All you need is zoot suits and John Huston directing this movie.

That “bottom line” – the other thing they freaked about? Their own vested interests in CBS. If news like this about their wunderkind head honcho broke, what does that do to that bottom line, and their portfolios? Hey, LAPD! Can you keep that under wraps for just a wee bit longer?

…The findings also allege one of the senior executives sold millions of dollars’ worth of shares based off of the information and before they went public. James said CBS allowed the executive, Gil Schwartz, to sell over 160,000 shares, or more than $8 million worth, six weeks before an article about the allegations against Moonves was published. Schwartz, who wrote books under the pen name Stanley Bing, including “Crazy Bosses: Spotting Them, Serving Them, Surviving Them,” died in 2020

Isn’t that the schweetest deal EH-VAH? Don’t you wish…nah. I know you don’t.

Six – count them, SIX – women came forward with claims of sexual harassment, and intimidation, including forced oral sex among other revolting and demeaning acts, while even more women described an abusive work environment. An August 6, 2018, New Yorker article detailed many of the allegations, with a Ronan Farrow-authored follow-up on the 9th of September. In the three weeks between articles, Moonves had acknowledged three of the encounters/affairs (insisted they were consensual), was negotiating his exit, and Farrow interviewed some of the women involved. Within three hours of the September piece’s publication – according to an update at the head of it – Moonves was OUT.

Update: Three hours after the publication of this story, CNN reported that Moonves would step down from his position at CBS. Later the same day, CBS announced that Moonves had left the company and would not receive any of his exit compensation, pending the results of the independent investigation into the allegations. The company named six new members of its board of directors and said it would donate twenty million dollars to organizations that support the #MeToo movement and workplace equality for women. The donation will be deducted from any severance payments that may be due to Moonves.

NY AG James’ report is here. Moonves and Paramount (who has to admit no wrongdoing or liability) are just out some cash to wrap this up.

…As part of filings related to Paramount’s third quarter earnings on Wednesday, the company reported it agreed to pay $7.25 million to shareholders, while Moonves will pay $2.5 million. This is in addition to the $14.25 million earlier paid by Paramount in the settlement.

“CBS and Leslie Moonves’ attempts to silence victims, lie to the public, and mislead investors can only be described as reprehensible,” James said in the Wednesday release.

The LAPD police captain who betrayed the trust implicit in the badge on his chest and of the women who came forward felt bad it hadn’t gone well for Moonves.

…“I’m deeply sorry that this has happened,” the LAPD captain allegedly told Moonves. “I will always stand with, by and pledge my allegiance to you. You have embodied leadership, class and the highest of character through all of this.”

Heartwarming. Who else and what else have they been covering for, and who’s been roughed up to do so? Moonves walked away with a little less change in his pocket (not counting the $100M golden parachute he lost being fired ‘for cause’), but he’s not Harvey Weinstein’s roommate, either. Good to be one of the chiefs most of the time. And CBS, for crying out loud! That company is nothing but a snakepit of blow-hard, lecturing, hectoring Social Justice Woke Warriors. #MeToo, my tookus. Gaslighting hypocrites of the first order!
