Suppose there is one constant attribute about the “principles first” conservatives. In that case, they are consistently stabbing the Republican Party, which they say they’re proud members of, in the back and supporting Democrats. These anti-Trump Republicans are now Democrats, who we have mostly dispensed with during the 2022 primaries.
This cadre of traitors mainly got wiped out, the prize scalp being soon-to-be-former Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), a woman so conservative and principled that she would support Katie Hobbs, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, who unabashedly supports abortion with no limits. The irony about all these Never Trump charlatans, which you know already, is that it’s all personal for them.
They have an unbridled and deep-seated loathing of former President Donald Trump that has blinded them into opposing everything they once championed. It’s also an ego check, as the GOP base no longer listens to these people nor wants them to be the prominent mouthpieces for the party. There’s nothing we can do right now, but when he’s up for re-election, we must do all we can to boot Sen. Mitt Romney, a perpetual thorn in the side of the GOP, who embodies the mindset above.
He’s not alone. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) form the two other heads that are part of this three-headed RINO creature. Democrats know these three are good bets for spoiling any Republican legislative items, especially when we have a slim majority, which, if all things go according to plan this year, will be the case when the next session of Congress is gaveled. The Republican Party is not favored to retake the Senate, but if this does happen, it will be akin to a Super Bowl win. But one whose honeymoon period could easily be spoiled since Chuck Schumer knows how to carve the edges of the GOP caucus.
Schumer has been able to corral these three on passing gun control legislation. Before that, he voted to convict Donald Trump twice on the Democrats’ bogus impeachment charges. After the 2022 midterms, Romney could again be asked to help pass a comprehensive immigration reform package. The latest act of disloyalty from Mr. Romney concerns the re-election effort of Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). Romney has refused to endorse or help Lee in any way, adding to the narrative that he’s the most useless Republican in the Senate.
Not helping Lee’s re-election effort must be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Is Romney trying to be Jim Jeffords here? Because it’s not the early 2000s, Bush isn’t president, and we’re not debating tax cuts. There may be disagreements on some facets of policy and Trump, but is this a chasm too big to bridge when it comes to an election endorsement? Evan McMullin, despite his “independent” label, is a Democrat. The Utah Democratic Party endorsed him, which explains everything about this race between Lee and McMuffin. If elected, you all know McMullin would caucus with the Democrats just like another independent senator currently serving, Bernie Sanders. This isn’t a hard choice for real conservatives: it’s Lee by a mile. And when Mr. Romney is up for re-election, hopefully, we will have a primary challenger, and that decision should be an even easier one to make than this year’s contest.
