De Niro Flubs Gotham Awards Speech, Claims anti-Trump Screed was Edited Out

Robert De Niro suffers from a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. This fact became known when he participated in awards shows during the Trump years and never failed to launch into an ugly, usually profanity-laced, screed about Trump. Trump has been out of office for three years and De Niro persists.

The 80-year-old actor was reading prepared remarks during the Gotham Independent Film Awards ceremony Monday night in New York City. His speech was meant to be a tribute to Killers of The Flower Moon, a critically acclaimed Western crime film directed by Martin Scorsese.

When De Niro began reading his prepared remarks for the introduction of the award, he noticed his comments had been edited. A video aired of the iconic director and Osage chief Geoffrey Standing Bear discussing the film, and then De Niro insisted he read the original speech he was going to give, which featured several specific, political comments, including ones about former President Donald Trump.

“History isn’t history anymore. Truth isn’t truth, and even facts are being replaced by alternative facts and driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness,” De Niro said onstage. “In Florida, young students are taught that slaves developed skills that could be applied for their personal benefit. The entertainment industry isn’t immune to this festering disease. The Duke, John Wayne, famously said of Native Americans, ‘I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.'”

De Niro’s delivery became confused and he paused, then backtracked. He explained that the editing of his remarks threw him off. So, he inserted what he wanted to say in order to trash Trump, as well as Republicans, like with the swipe toward Florida’s revised AP History curriculum. He proved himself to be another out-of-touch 80-year-old progressive.

De Niro — who was joined at the Gotham Awards by his costars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone — made it clear that he had originally planned to include several cutting remarks about former President Donald Trump, but he seemingly accused the awards show and Apple, which produced Killers Of The Flower Moon, of having edited his remarks.

Trump has long been despised by De Niro, and the star has bashed him mercilessly for years ever since stepping up his public criticisms ahead of the 2016 election. Last month, De Niro sent a statement to be read in his absence at the Stop Trump Summit, which was organized by The New Republic magazine.

De Niro needs some help.

Are awards show producers editing remarks? British politician Nigel Farage claimed his remarks were edited from a U.K. reality show that were to be about his friendship with Trump. Maybe award shows realize that politics aren’t a great mix for their audiences. It’s not why people tune in.
