That Time John Fetterman Made Me Like Him

Townhall Media

Why? Why is Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) saying things that make me like him lately? We are living in upside down world.

I was doing just fine lumping Fetterman with all the other Democrats in the Senate, most of whom I think are leftists and hellbent to turn our country into a land of Marxism. Fetterman had a severe stroke while he was campaigning for the Senate seat. I thought he should have bowed out of the race and returned home to fully recover, surrounded by his family and friends. He didn’t and not only won the race but the Senate has been completely accommodating toward him and his disabilities caused by the stroke. The Senate was even willing to go as far as to change its dress code for him. Then his fellow senators corrected that mistake. Not too long after that, Fetterman actually began to make sense when he spoke. Instead of a far-left Democrat, he sounded like a lot of Americans.

I hesitate to say it because I don’t want to jinx it but sometimes lately Fetterman sounds like the rest of us. For example, Fetterman was quick to offer his support to Israel after the massacres of October 7 happened. Today marks the one month anniversary of that horrible day and he has not wavered. You don’t hear him calling for a ceasefire or going wobbly like many Democrats, including Joe Biden and his administration, are doing.

On Saturday evening, Fetterman made me like him again. He called out California Governor Gavin Newsom for not having the cojones to admit he is running for president. He did it in Iowa during a Democrat dinner. Fetterman slammed Newsom for publicly saying he supports Biden’s re-election while he is going around doing things that a presidential candidate would do. Newsom is traveling internationally to places like Israel and China, he is picking fights with red state governors like Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, and he is scheduled to debate DeSantis on Sean Hannity’s show later this month. DeSantis is officially running for president so why would Newsom bother to debate him in front of Hannity’s huge television audience if he didn’t want to be taken seriously as presidential material? It’s been clear for some time that Newsom is running a shadow campaign for the Democrat nomination.

So, Fetterman showed some loyalty to Biden in Iowa and noted that two Democrats are challenging Biden.

“There are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now,” said Fetterman, who acknowledged that he still has lingering speech issues after he had a stroke in 2022. “One is a congressman from Minnesota, the other one is the governor of California, but only one has the guts to announce it.”

Don’t tell him but he sounds like some Republican candidates.

Fetterman isn’t the only political figure to have recently accused Newsom of making a bid for the White House while in Iowa. Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said in Iowa City last month, “The man is running for president, doing it and doing it in disguise, doing it with a track record at a state that is more disastrous by the day.”

The only person Newsom is fooling is himself. Of course, he is running. If he doesn’t get a shot at it in 2024, he’ll be the first in line in the 2028 Democrat primary.

During a campaign event Sunday, Fetterman was heckled by a pro-Palestinian person in the audience. He owned the guy by referencing his stroke.

Perfect. He didn’t have to say anything else to the disrupter.

Sometimes even John Fetterman gets it right. It’s a little unnerving to see him doing it consistently lately. I don’t know how long it will last, but for now, there are times I applaud him.
