Boebert behaving badly: “Do you know who I am?”

We are not sending out best and brightest to Congress.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and her date were asked to leave a musical production of “Beetlejuice” at the Buell Theatre in Denver on Sunday night. The reason for her ejection from the venue was due to accusations of vaping, singing, recording the show and being disruptive during the performance. Boebert and an unnamed male were escorted from the city-owned venue but not before Boebert rebuked an usher, at one point giving him the middle finger salute. As the two were removed from the premises, Boebert let loose with “Do you know who I am?” and “I will be contacting the mayor.” She also said she sits on the theatre’s board.

Denver Police were called to the theatre and stayed in the lobby until Boebert and the man left. Denver Police Sgt. David Abeyta said the venue’s private security handled the situation, “so we actually never had any interaction with that incident.”.

Surveillance footage was released.

An incident report was released. Officials with Denver Arts & Venues wrote that two patrons were asked to leave the theatre during the performance of the touring Broadway show. The report did not name Boebert or her male companion. They were issued a warning during the intermission over their behavior, as there were three complaints from other theatregoers.

The incident report states that after receiving the intermission warning, about five minutes into the second act security officials received “another complaint about the patrons being loud and at the time (they) were recording.” Taking pictures or recording is not permitted at shows.

The report quotes one of the ushers: “They told me they would not leave. I told them that they need to leave the theater and if they do not, they will be trespassing. The patrons said they would not leave. I told them I would (be) going to get Denver Police. They said go get them.”

Boebert’s campaign manager denied the vaping accusation to the Washington Post. He admits she did use her cellphone during the performance to take a picture but said she wasn’ aware that photos weren’t allowed. He then delivered a rather smart-ass statement about the incident.

“I can confirm the stunning and salacious rumors: in her personal time, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is indeed a supporter of the performing arts (gasp!) and, to the dismay of a select few, enthusiastically enjoyed a weekend performance of ‘Beetlejuice,’ ” Sexton wrote in a statement. He noted that The Post’s review of the show last week described it as “zany,” “outrageous,” and a ‘lusty riot.’ ”

Boebert, he wrote, encourages everyone to see the play and its “fantastic cast, tremendous visuals and plenty of loud laughs” — but, he added, “with a gentle reminder to leave their phones outside of the venue.”

Wow. I don’t think this was the time to use sarcasm. Boebert posted on X and brushed the matter off as just enjoying herself at the live show.

A spokesman for Denver Arts & Venues said he couldn’t confirm if alcohol was involved. If she really was vaping during the performance, what was she vaping?

As you can imagine, Democrat operatives are having a field day, especially with the accusation about vaping. Apparently, a pregnant woman was sitting behind her and complained.

And, conservatives are none-too-pleased. Rightly so.

Shouldn’t a congresswoman be expected to conduct herself properly in public? She was ruining the experience of watching a live performance by her alleged obnoxious behavior. No one would begrudge her of a fun evening at the theatre but, c’mon. She should be held to a higher standard. Is this how she raises her sons to act?

This is Boebert’s second term in Congress. She is 36-years-old, the mother of four sons, and a grandmother. She and her husband are divorcing. She calls herself a born again Christian.

Politicians are no more perfect human beings than any of the rest of us. However, appropriate public behavior shouldn’t be a struggle for a member of Congress. This is a person who rails against The Swamp yet acts just like one of them. “Do you know who I am?”, indeed.

She has a checkered personal history. She claims to be pro-police and law and order but her personal conduct is not always aligned with that. She has been arrested and summoned four times over the past decade.

Boebert’s first run-in with police was in the fall of 2010, after a neighbor, Michele Soet, alleged that Boebert, then 23, was harassing Soet and Soet’s husband. The alleged harassment occurred in the days after Soet called police because Boebert’s pit bulls were loose and threatening the life of her dogs.

Boebert was issued a ticket for dog code violations and a short time later texted Soet, “You have taken food out of my children’s mouths,” according to Soet. Boebert also “displayed her middle finger” to Soet’s husband as he drove through Rifle, according to a Garfield County sheriff’s deputy’s report.

Boebert was arrested twice in Mesa County in 2015. As first reported by Colorado Newsline, Boebert was detained on June 20, 2015, after a verbal altercation with police at Country Jam, a music festival near Grand Junction. Boebert, then 28 years old, allegedly shouted at people detained on suspicion of underage drinking, urging them to flee from police, which caused the young drinkers to become unruly.

While she was being handcuffed for disorderly conduct, Boebert tried to twist away from police, according to deputies’ reports. She allegedly shouted that her arrest was unconstitutional, that “she had friends at Fox News and that the arrest would be national news.” It did not become national news.

Boebert was released from custody and told to appear in court that August but missed her court date because, as she told a judge, she forgot what day of the week it was. “I am now aware today is Friday,” she wrote on Aug. 28, 2015, hours after she was supposed to be in court.

She was arrested when she failed to appear for a second court date for that case.

I realize this is conduct coming from a young person. It starts when she is 23. People can clean up their acts and move ahead, if they want to do that. These violations are all relatively minor things and all before she was elected to office, but they involve interacting with others in her community. If she is to be taken seriously as a member of Congress, she needs to do better now. Is it too much to ask that she straighten up and fly right, as my mother used to tell me and my sisters growing up?

It’s time for Boebert to grow up. Being an agitator is all fine and good until she finds herself in a jail cell, which is where she is heading with this behavior if she continues to escalate, acting as though the rules are not for her.

Boebert found herself on the wrong side of campaign finance laws and ethics laws since she has been a member of Congress. This is from her Wikipedia page. I know, it’s not my favorite source but it has a write-up about the subject.

Despite campaign finance laws and ethics laws requiring Congressional candidates to reveal their immediate family’s income sources to show potential conflicts of interest, Boebert did not report her husband’s income in her 2020 filing, instead belatedly revealing it in August 2021,[31] the same day the Federal Election Commission (FEC) sent her a letter investigating her campaign expenses.[76] The filing, while misnaming the company involved, stated that her husband, Jayson, was paid $460,000 in 2019 and $478,000 in 2020 as a consultant for Terra Energy, one of Colorado’s largest natural gas producers and fourth nationwide in methane emissions.[31][77] The company told The Daily Beast that Jayson was a contracted shift worker for the company who was not paid directly but through another company, Boebert Consulting.[78] As of 2021, Colorado classified Boebert Consulting as a delinquent company due to the lack of filings or registered agent with the state.[76] Boebert oversees the energy industry via her position on the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Boebert won re-election by 500 votes in 2022. She is running for a third term. She may well be re-elected. For now, Real Clear Politics lists her race as a toss-up. I hope she matures some and can set a better example as a public figure in the meantime.
