Doc clears Mitch McConnell after scary 'freeze' moment

Here’s a little update on Senator Mitch McConnell. McConnell had another one of his scary freeze moments while taking questions at an event in Covington, Kentucky Wednesday.

He consulted with the attending physician of the Capitol, Dr. Brian P. Monahan. Monahan also spoke with McConnell’s neurology team. He told Senate Minority Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule. However, Monahan did not say he examined McConnell himself. I think he should have at least given him a quick once-over, but I’m not a doctor. I just give my opinion here.

Thursday McConnell’s office released a statement from Dr. Monahan.

“After evaluating yesterday’s incident, I have informed Leader McConnell that he is medically clear to continue with his schedule as planned,” Monahan said. “Occasional lightheadedness is not uncommon in concussion recovery and can also be expected as a result of dehydration.”

“Lightheadedness” is what McConnell’s office suggested was the cause shortly after Wednesday’s episode.

McConnell appeared to freeze for about a half a minute while answering reporters’ questions in Covington Wednesday. He had an aide to smooth the incident over but there was little she could do but stand next to him and repeat the reporter’s question, raising her voice as though he is hard of hearing. I don’t think his hearing has anything to do with his condition. I definitely think his spotty mental acuity episodes – the freeze – can be directly traced back to the concussion he suffered earlier this year. He hit his head during a nasty fall at an event. He was hospitalized and then recovered for weeks afterward at home.

Lightheadedness in concussion recovery. Dehydration. Those excuses for his freeze make sense and sound benign enough. However, every time it happens, the same questions are going to be asked – is he okay? Shouldn’t he be thinking about retiring? He’s 81-years-old and has served honorably for many years. It feels like he is irreplaceable because of his knowledge of parliamentarian rules and Senate procedures. As I mentioned in my post after the latest freeze, Republicans owe him a debt of gratitude for keeping Merrick Garland off the Supreme Court. That was a bullet we dodged. Just look at how horrible he is at being the attorney general. And, with what all that is coming out about Biden, Inc. and the misadventures of the First Son, we can probably conclude that Garland has a corrupt streak, too. It sure looks like he was going along with covering for Hunter Biden with that sweetheart plea bargain deal. Garland also had to have approved the special counsel shenanigans (that’s a legal term) to go after former President Trump.

It’s probably a good idea for McConnell to have a talk with his wife, Elaine Chou about retirement. Thanks to his urging, the Kentucky Legislature passed a rule that the governor will appoint a replacement of a senator who leaves office before his or her term is up. That appointment has to be from the senator’s political party. So, McConnell would be replaced by a Republican by the Democrat governor of Kentucky.

Some of our top political leadership is aging out and we need to address that. Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and Dianne Feinstein are all on the political scene when it’s time for their loved ones to speak honestly and frankly with them. Also Senator John Fetterman. He is not able to serve to the fullest extent. There comes a point when it becomes elder abuse. It’s difficult but when the time comes to take grandpa’s keys to the car, you just have to do it. Power, control, and those sweet, sweet perks are hard to give up. C’est la vie.
