Mayorkas told U.S. Conference of Mayors that border encounters have dropped "significantly"

Is that right? DHS Secretary Mayorkas delivered a speech at the winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. He claimed that thanks to his new policies, border encounters are down significantly. How, then, does he explain the December numbers that are coming soon from CBP? Sources have told Fox News that the December numbers will be the highest numbers ever released by CBP.

It is expected that the number of encounters will be 250,000 plus. A quarter of a million illegal migrants in one month were encountered at the southern border. That’s unbelievable. That number tops the most recent record of 241,136 in May 2022.

Mayorkas told the country’s mayors that the number of illegal migrants coming from “targeted countries” had “dropped significantly” over the past two weeks. He cited announced action by the agency to combat the border crisis. He did not provide any numbers to back up his claims during his speech.

“We’re executing a comprehensive strategy to secure our borders and build a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system,” Mayorkas said.

Hmm. Where has this been for the past two years as the Biden border crisis has exploded? If such great success is happening after only two weeks of new policies, why wasn’t that done a long time ago? It sure looks like this is some kind of election season conversion. Is Mayorkas only now serious about acting to secure the border because Biden is about to announce he is running for re-election? Is it because Republicans are in the majority in the House now and are talking about investigating Mayorkas and possibly seeking to impeach him? It’s probably a little of both.

“Two weeks ago, we announced new lawful pathways for non-citizens seeking relief in the United States, accompanied by a consequence regime for those who do not avail themselves of those processes. Since then, encounters from the targeted countries have dropped significantly,” he added, while also referring to the U.S.’s immigration system as “broken” and “in desperate need of legislative reform.”

Mayorkas and other Democrats can talk about legislative reform all they want. Mayorkas should start by enforcing the laws already on the books. Governor Abbott handed a letter to Biden with suggestions on how to secure the border and handle the flood of illegal migrants crossing the border. None of the suggestions involved passing new laws. Biden didn’t even read the letter. This administration is not serious about border control. The Biden border crisis is intentional.

In case any further proof is needed, Mayorkas only devoted one minute of his 13-minute speech to talking about the Biden border crisis. He chose to focus his time on “domestic violence extremism,” which he said is “one of the most persistent threats” facing the nation. Unbelievable. At least Mayorkas didn’t say it was climate change this time.

Republican Rep. Pat Fallon of Texas pledged to file articles of impeachment against Mayorkas when Republicans took back control of the House. He kept his promise. Before that happens, though, a House investigation will need to be carried out. That investigative process began on Thursday.

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee on Thursday sent letters to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and top Border Patrol officials seeking information on the administration’s border policies. The committee plans to hold a hearing on the issue next month, its chairman, U.S. Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, announced in a statement accusing Biden’s policies of “fueling” a crisis at the border, where arrests topped more than 2 million for the first time last year.

“Republicans will hold the Biden administration accountable for this ongoing humanitarian, national security, and public health crisis that has turned every town into a border town,” Comer said.

A separate group of Republican senators and congressmen, including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and U.S. Rep. Brian Babin of Woodville, sent another letter this week to Mayorkas demanding details on Biden’s plan to handle the arrival of an unprecedented number of migrants seeking asylum in the United States as they flee oppressive governments in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.

It’s a start. Mayorkas won’t be impeached as long as Joe Biden is president and the Democrats control the Senate. Mayorkas is doing exactly what Biden wants him to do. At least Mayorkas will have to deliver some accountability for his actions in his position.
