Joe Biden delivered remarks at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health on Wednesday. John wrote about a hugely embarrassing moment when Biden acknowledged the lawmakers responsible for the event. Unfortunately, one of them passed away last month in a car crash. Biden apparently forgot that Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) died and he called for her to stand and be recognized.
It was truly a jaw-dropping moment when Biden paused his remarks and asked where Rep. Walorski was in the audience. .
Biden asked the crowd gathered for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health in Washington, D.C. where Walorski was located as he thanked lawmakers for their work on a plan to end hunger in the U.S. by 2030.
He interrupted his own remarks to ask: ‘Jackie, are you here?’
‘Where’s Jackie? She must not be here,’ Biden concluded. It came after he also praised Senators Mike Braun, a Republican, and Cory Booker, a Democrat, on the bipartisan initiative.
As John noted in his post, at the time of Walorski’s death, Joe and Jill Biden sent a note of condolence to her family and the White House lowered flags for two days in honor of her. It was just last month. It was just cringeworthy and sad. At the time, I wondered what Jackie’s family must have thought as they listened to Biden.
Now we know. Keith Walorski, brother of Jackie, is coming forward and showing an incredible amount of grace toward the president. Essentially, Keith says that Joe Biden is an old man and is doing the best he can. He feels sorry for Biden.
“It’s par for the course,” Walorski told The Post of Biden’s bizarre gaffe. “I feel sorry for him, really.”
“He made a phone call after my sister was killed and he was very sincere in his relaying the grief process because he’s been through that grief process, he knows all about it,” Keith Walorski added.
“All I’m saying right now about the president is bless his heart for trying. Yeah, it was a big mess-up today. Inexcusable? No. Unforgivable? No. I’m not gonna hold it against him. I just feel sorry for him.”
Wow. He is a generous man. Biden is old and everyone can observe his decline in mental acuity. He is, more often than not, dazed and confused at any event.
It tracks that Biden would talk about his own grief process to Walorski. He always does that when he talks about loss. Keith Walorski said Biden is just forgetful now.
“That’s probably a nice way of putting it: He’s forgetful,” he said. “I don’t think anybody would look at the things that he’s done and said and say that his mind is as sharp as it used to be.”
Keith Walorski added, “I don’t know what else to say. He is doing the best he can do with what he’s got right now.”
Jackie’s husband, Dean Swihart, declined to make a comment.
Walorski is focusing on the outpouring of sympathy the family is receiving.
Keith Walorski, who repairs electric motors and generators, said that he was grateful for the outpouring of sympathy for his sister after her death.
“When I was in the receiving line and when I went through the whole funeral process, the number of people that came that I didn’t know and really hardly knew Jackie, but they said, ‘When I needed help, she helped me’ — whether it was the VA, whether it was food or hunger or whatever it was, there were thousands of people who came through that line,” he said.
“So many of them a lot of people would look at and say, ‘I’m not gonna walk across the room to talk to that person because they look like they’re homeless or they look like they’re down on their luck and they’re gonna ask me for something.’ And a lot of people would stick their nose in the air and walk away. But what they said was, ‘She helped me.’”
What started out as a story full of embarrassing words from Joe Biden is ending on a sweet note. It’s the best way to honor Rep. Walorski, who is widely acknowledged by her colleagues as a really good person.
