It looks like things have taken a turn for the better in Minneapolis. Last night, local police did some actual policing. They made arrests of some of the activists hounding ICE and they declared an unlawful assembly at one point.
These are things they should have been doing all along but Mayor Frey had pulled them back putting the protesters directly in confrontation with the activists. Now it appears that that Tom Homan, who Trump sent to Minneapolis a few days ago. It looks like Homan and Gov. Walz might have worked out some kind of deal. We'll circle back to that in a moment but first here's what happened last night.
Video showed a small group of agitators gathering outside the Graduate by Hilton Hotel at around 9 p.m., with the crowd swelling to an estimated 150 to 175 people.
Agitators were seen blowing whistles, banging pots and pans, shaking metal barricades and striking the rails set up outside the property. One person was also seen playing what appeared to be a trombone.
Roughly two hours later, officers were seen descending on the scene with police declaring an unlawful assembly over a loudspeaker and ordering the crowd to disperse. Footage also showed a brief standoff between police and remaining agitators before the crowd thinned.
Activists were given a chance to leave. Those who refused got arrested.
A dozen demonstrators were arrested late Thursday during a noisy protest outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing federal immigration officers.
In a statement from the University of Minnesota, 11 of the protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct and one was arrested for property damage outside the Graduate By Hilton hotel off University Avenue in Stadium Village.
"In an effort to balance free speech rights with a duty to maintain public order, those in attendance during four separate protest events were allowed to assemble in front of the hotel for more than 13 hours," university officials said in a statement. "On Feb. 5, officers gave five orders to disperse and those who refused to comply were arrested."
Ford Fischer has video of the group making a nuisance of themselves outside the hotel.

Police declared an unlawful assembly but some of the protesters refused to leave and began squaring off with the police.
2) "You are are hereby ordered to disperse" police announced to the protesters, who largely ran away from the hotel, as additional officers in riot gear arrived along with an armored vehicle.

Some of them got arrested, including this guy who tried to run full speed through a line of police and wound up hitting the pavement instead.

As mentioned above, there were a handful of activists who refused to leave after police gave a final warning. They were arrested. But as you'll see in this clip a few of the activists finally got the message and decided to run.

"Let's go man, let's leave, let's run," one activist said, and the remainder left the scene.

There were also two other arrests yesterday which are noteworthy. One was Kyle Wagner, a guy arrested for making threats against ICE agents.
A Minneapolis man was arrested Thursday on charges of cyberstalking and threatening to kill or assault Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers involved in the crackdown in Minnesota.
Federal prosecutors said in a statement that Kyle Wagner, 37, of Minneapolis, was charged by complaint, and that a decision to seek an indictment, which is necessary to take the case to trial, would be made soon...
According to prosecutors, Wagner repeatedly posted on Facebook and Instagram encouraging his followers to "forcibly confront, assault, impede, oppose, and resist federal officers" whom he referred to as the "gestapo" and "murderers."
The complaint alleges Wagner posted a video last month that directly threatened ICE officers with an obscenity-laden rant. "I've already bled for this city, I've already fought for this city, this is nothing new, we're ready this time," he said, concluding that he was "coming for" ICE.
Finally, police also arrested Ed Hu yesterday. His arrest was caught on video and one of the activists demanded to know why he was being arrested. One of the ICE agents came over and told her. Hu had made specific threats online and when he spotted this particular agent he'd driven his car at her.

Why the sudden change in Minneapolis? No one is really saying but it appears that maybe Tom Homan reached some kind of agreement with Walz or Frey or both. Up to now, police have been mostly absent when ICE is operating in an area. Now, suddenly, we have all these arrests and some actual crowd control.
Also, yesterday Homan announced that 700 ICE agents would be withdrawn from Minneapolis, leaving as many as 2,000 still in the city.
President Trump said on Wednesday that he personally ordered the withdrawal of 700 law enforcement officers involved in the federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota and that his administration could use a “softer touch.”...
Earlier in the day, Tom Homan, the White House border czar, said about 2,000 officers and agents would be left in the state.
Mr. Homan said the change came after an “unprecedented number of counties” were cooperating with federal officials and allowing ICE to take custody of unauthorized immigrants before they were released from jails. But he did not specify which counties had increased their cooperation.
“This is smart law enforcement, not less law enforcement,” Mr. Homan said.
So, again, it looks like a deal was made. Trump agreed to pull nearly a third of agents out of the city. Walz/Frey agreed to let police do crowd control and to allow ICE to pick up illegal aliens directly from jails, something that sanctuary cities usually refuse to do. Both sides have compromised a bit and the result is good for everyone with the exception of the agitators who were used to running the streets. Hopefully, they keep being taken to jail like they were last night.
