Today is day 12 of the Sean Combs aka Diddy aka Puff aka Puff Daddy trial. Today appears to have been another really bad day for Combs because testimony was given by his former female assistant who is testifying under the pseudonym Mia to protect her identity as much as possible. Mia not only testified to seeing Combs beat up his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, she also testified that she became a victim of sexual assault.
But before we even got to Mia's testimony, there was more damaging testimony from Deonte Nash.
Deonte Nash, a stylist employed by Combs’s company Bad Boy who considers himself a friend of Ventura, testified about a birthday party during which he saw her and Combs arguing. Later, Ventura told Nash that Combs was “making her” go to a hotel, he said. According to Ventura’s own testimony of that event, Combs pushed her to do a freak-off that night, despite her saying she didn’t want to.
Nash previously testified that Combs got violent with him at times, and described an incident when Combs allegedly threw him against a car and choked him. The reason, Nash said, was that Combs was upset about Nash and Ventura going out to clubs together.
Sex, violence and jealousy are recurring themes in this trial. Which brings us back to Mia.
“He’s thrown things at me. He’s thrown me against the wall. He’s thrown me into a pool,” Mia said, staring at her lap. “He also, um, sexually assaulted me.”
While working for Combs in a job that was basically 24/7, Mia became good friends with Cassie Ventura. She described them on the stand as "like sisters." That proximity gave her a front row seat to Combs' rage, including one incident when she tried to stop an attack by jumping on Combs' back.
Ventura suffered a nasty cut on her forehead after Combs attacked her at the victim's Los Angeles apartment, the witness said.
"Mia" testified she tried to stop the beating by jumping on Combs' back, before the music mogul threw her against the wall.
"It was so fast, but I felt like I was in slow motion," Mia said. "I saw him grab Cass and I couldn't get there fast enough, the bed platform was the sharpest I had ever seen and he threw her and she hit her head on the corner of the bed."
In another incident, she and Ventura snuck out of a hotel room to go to a party being held by Prince, but Combs found them.
Mia said a friend called and said Prince was having a party and she and Ventura “like little kids snuck out of the house.” They went to Prince’s party and were having fun, when Combs showed up.
“I saw his bucket hat coming through the entrance. We locked eyes and crap, Cass and I started running through the house to get out across the yard, trying to run and hide there,” Mia explained. “Puff caught Cass, he caught up to her and had her and threw her to the ground and started to attack her.”
Mia said Prince’s security intervened. The next day, Mia was notified she was being suspended without pay and Combs said she was being insubordinate.
Eventually, she told the story of her own sexual assaults by Combs.
“I was like standing against the wall and I just remembered he was talking and all of a sudden his face got closer. … I didn’t really know what was happening,” she said. The witness, his former assistant, said she didn’t vocally object but didn’t want him to do what came next.
“He leaned in to kiss me” and put his hand “up the side of my dress,” Mia testified.
On another occasion she woke up and he was on top of her in her bedroom in his house.
"Mia" said she was on the bottom of a bunk bed when she was awakened by Combs on top of her.
Asked if she had wanted to have sex with Combs, a tearful Mia said no and, "It was very quick."
And there were other instances, including one where he forced her to perform oral sex.
Mia said she was "just frozen" when Combs came out of a closet at his L.A. home and had his penis out of his pants before forcing her head down.
She said the attack made her feel "like trash," and when the prosecution asked if she had consented to this, Mia replied: "No, it was really fast."
The fact that she was an employee and not a girlfriend didn't seem to matter and she knew she couldn't report the incidents to the company's HR department.
Mia added “there was no way” she would have reported Sean Combs’s alleged abuse to his HR department, which she only ever saw used to punish employees who he was unhappy with.
All in all, not a good day for Combs. Mia backed up some of the claims of violence made by Cassie Ventura and added her own assaults, which she said seemed to happen almost randomly, in a way that is going to be difficult to counter if Combs doesn't testify. It's a safe bet that won't happen so the jury is getting a picture of him as someone who abused and beat women whenever they angered or disobeyed him. Not a good look and probably won't help him when it comes time to deliberate.
