Democrats Have Big Money Plans to 'Achieve Narrative Dominance'

Progressives have decided they know what went wrong in 2024. It was a messaging problem or more precisely a social media dominance problem. If only they had a Joe Rogan of their own, they'd have been able to defeat Trump

Democrats widely believe they must grow more creative in stoking online enthusiasm for their candidates, particularly in less outwardly political forms of media like sports or lifestyle podcasts. Many now take it as gospel that Mr. Trump’s victory last year came in part because he cultivated an ecosystem of supporters on YouTube, TikTok and podcasts, in addition to the many Trump-friendly hosts on Fox News.

The quiet effort amounts to an audacious — skeptics might say desperate — bet that Democrats can buy more cultural relevance online, despite the fact that casually right-leaning touchstones like Mr. Rogan’s podcast were not built by political donors and did not rise overnight.

I'd just point out that already this plan is doomed to fail. The problem Democrats had in 2024 was not a lack of money or a lack of online support. The problem was two terrible candidate backed up by lots of lying, i.e. Joe Biden was sharp as a tack and Kamala Harris was ultra-qualified and full of joy. And the other problem on top of those two problems was that Democrats insisted on taking the 20% end of several 80-20 issues including immigration and trans athletes. It wasn't that Dems didn't have a Joe Rogan, it was that Dems couldn't defend their stupid policies in front of someone like Joe Rogan who wasn't already on board with the program.

Nevertheless, the left is sure it was a messaging/media dominance problem. So sure are they of this theory that there are now half a dozen newly minted progressive media organizations all competing to raise millions of dollars for the next election.

“It needs to start with a legitimate investment,” said Marissa McBride, a Democratic strategist who leads a donor group called Mind the Gap. But she added, “There has to be something that is happening organically as well.”...

In November, Ms. McBride and other liberal operatives gathered in Washington for a series of meetings to survey the election wreckage. At the headquarters of American Bridge, one of the largest Democratic donor networks, they eventually hatched a plan for a for-profit media company called AND Media, which stands for “Achieve Narrative Dominance.”...

Hoping to move away from “the current didactic, hall monitor style of Democratic politics that turns off younger audiences,” AND Media will focus on directly funding influencers and co-producing their content, opening a creator talent agency and starting by “inking deals with four ‘flagship’ creators,” according to a business plan shared with The Times.

In other words, they are going to AstroTurf the next Joe Rogan into existence. And there are more projects with similar goals.

Another effort with ties to major donors is called Project Bullhorn, which is meant to pool contributions to back creator projects...

He is largely trying to amplify existing influencer networks: An early recipient of the money he raises will be a fund backing left-leaning creators on YouTube.

People for the American Way is creating another clone group called, appropriately enough, Project Echo. Yet another one aimed at apolitical influencers is titled Double Tap Democracy. They have a website up but it's mostly blank still.

All of these projects are looking to raise tens of millions of dollars from big Democratic donors. It's hard to think of a worse solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. Some of the commenters get it.

Too many liberals either don't know or ignore the inconvenient fact that the Harris campaign far outspent Trump.  Rather than thinking about new ways for the superrich to throw money at politics, how about spending time and effort thinking about what can be done to strengthen the economy, help those struggling, and get things built at an affordable cost?

Another one:

This may be well intended, but it feels incredibly phony and disingenuous. Let’s not forget the dems had Joe Rogan until activists in aligned groups tried to cancel him. In addition to the hall monitor problem, the party has an authenticity problem. Buying influencers will likely come off as inauthentic, and diminish the influence those influencers have.

This guy says it well. Democrats don't have a lack of mouthpieces, they have a lack of followers.

The problem is not the lack of leaders and mouthpieces, it is the lack of followers.

I remember a while back, what the Democrats said is that we need left-wing talk radio.   So they created several left-wing talk radio stations, but they didn't attract enough listeners to be financially viable.

The Democrats will get nowhere until they admit that the voters aren't buying what they're selling.

Yeah, this really does seem doomed to fail but, hey, never interrupt your opponents when they are making a costly mistake.
