Trump Makes a Visit to Dearborn

It's no secret that Arab Americans in Michigan have soured on the Biden administration, with some saying they will not vote for Kamala Harris and others promising to vote for Trump. Today, Trump became the first candidate to visit Dearborn, MI, the largest Arab-majority city in the country. He stopped by a coffee shop where he received a warm welcome.

On a crisp, sunny day in the largest Arab-majority city in the US, dozens of people gathered outside the Great Commoner cafe to catch a glimpse of Donald Trump.

“What we want is peace,” Trump told a group of Arab-American business leaders inside the Dearborn, Michigan, restaurant - days before the presidential election...

The Republican’s Friday visit to Dearborn, once a reliably Democratic area, marks the culmination of his efforts to court the 200,000-plus Arab-Americans who live in must-win Michigan. It could sway a tied race between Trump and Kamala Harris. Hillary Clinton lost Michigan to Trump by only 10,000 votes in 2016, while Biden won it back by 150,000 votes in 2020.

Here's video of the stop.

NPR has more on the visit.

"We have a great feeling for Lebanon and I know so many people from Lebanon, Lebanese people and the Muslim population, they're liking Trump and they've had a good relationship with him," he said. "This is it, this is where they are, Dearborn. We want their votes and we're looking for their votes and I think we'll get their votes."

Trump went on to tout polling numbers in Michigan and other swing states before attacking Vice President Harris as an "inferior candidate."...

Asked about Trump's visit to Dearborn, Harris told reporters she had a "significant amount of support" from Arab Americans because of her position on ending the war in Gaza and her commitment to a two-state solution — and because of her positions on economic issues.

I'm not convinced Harris has significant support in Dearborn. I've seen quite a few stories saying that's not the case this time around. But CNN had an interesting story up noting how Harris is running different ads in different states. In Pennsylvania, the ads emphasize her undying support for Israel. In Michigan they emphasize her desire for peace.

I guess this is the kind of thing all politicians do to some extent but it's a bit jarring to see two ads like this that are apparently running at the same time in the different states. Some outside group should pay to put the PA ad on the air in Michigan and the Michigan ad on the air in PA. It's probably too late for it to matter now but it would be very entertaining to see Harris try to straighten that mess out.
