Rebekah Jones pleads no contest to stalking charge, gets probation (Update)

I’ve been writing about Rebekah Jones for more than two years now. In that time her press credibility has gone from resistance hero to embarrassed silence. That may be why there’s not a single news story up about her latest brush with the law.

To be precise, yesterday Jones pleaded no contest to a charge of stalking. That means she didn’t admit guilt and based on the document above adjudication was withheld which means this is not considered a conviction the way a trial would be. Nevertheless, she was found guilty and sentenced to one year of probation, a day in jail (time served) and a batterers intervention program. The backstory here is that Jones was accused of revenge porn back in 2020:

News4Jax obtained Jones’ arrest affidavit, which shows that in June 2019, a victim submitted an online report in reference to “revenge porn.” The victim advised he had an injunction against Jones for the past year, which had expired.

The probable cause affidavit alleges that Jones put up a website with naked pictures of him and sent it to his place of employment. Jones was arrested a month later, and as of Wednesday, the case was still in pretrial status. Records show she was formally charged with stalking.

If you’re at all familiar with Jones they you’ve probably already guessed her version of the story is substantially different. Today she wrote a Twitter thread claiming she was the victim of stalking by an ex-boyfriend. She also posted her victim’s name on Twitter today. It seems like this sidesteps the whole point of the stalking punishment she just agreed to but I have no idea if this will lead to any additional legal trouble for her.

Jones’ probation is running concurrently with another probation she is already serving in the case against her for cybersecurity charges. In that case there was a deferred prosecution meaning she will serve two years probation but won’t formally be convicted so long as she doesn’t violate the probation. In that case she also agreed to pay $20,000 to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Given all of the attention Jones received from the media back in 2020, 2021 and 2022 when she was accusing Gov. DeSantis of faking COVID data, illegally raiding her home and finally kidnapping her son, you’d think these cases would receive a bit of media attention. But so far not one outlet has covered this that I can find.

As mentioned, there’s another pending case in Florida involving Rebekah Jones’ son. As you may recall, he was arrested in April for allegedly threatening to shoot up a school.

The 13-year-old son of a controversial Florida whistle-blower was arrested this week on charges that he made “terrorist” threats on the internet to shoot up his former school.

The son of Rebekah Jones — who lost her job after using her access to health department data to challenge Gov. Ron DeSantis’ COVID numbers early in the pandemic — was arrested Wednesday on charges he made “written [or] electronic threats” of a “mass shooting [or] terrorist act.”

Jones was quick to claim the arrest was political but as Vice pointed out, those claims didn’t hold up.

She has claimed on Twitter that the arrest was politically motivated, and that her son was “taken on the gov’s orders,” was arrested “for non-threatening snapchat memes,” and said that the arrest was “retaliatory rule by a fascist [Ron DeSantis] who wishes to be king.” She stated “they kidnapped my son.”…

Police documents and warrant service reports, however, suggest that multiple students at her son’s former middle school reported him to teachers because they were worried he would shoot up the school. (Jones’ son is now homeschooled.) Snapchat messages obtained by the police as part of a search warrant do indeed return memes that joke about school shootings sent by her son. But they also show legitimately concerning messages he allegedly sent that appear to be specific threats against a specific middle school.

More details here if you’re interested.

There’s definitely a pattern here. Whenever there is bad news for Jones, she quickly claims she is the victim (“they kidnapped my son”) even if the facts don’t support that. She did the same thing last year when an Inspector General’s report concluded her claims about Florida’s COVID data either lacked sufficient evidence to back them up or were false. Instead of admitting the loss, Jones put up a video claiming the IG “found in my favor.”

Anyway, if you’re looking for a summary of Jones’ greatest hits, this is a good one. Even the Young Turks has belatedly realized she’s a liar.

Update: There was one story about this yesterday (which I missed) from the South Santa Rosa News. And today it looks like one more outlet has picked it up. Thanks to Dan Goldwasser for the tip.
